So far...

03 October 2001 : Firstly, I would like to talk about my involvement in the International Night 2001 event at Currie Hall. This time, I wasn't only a spectator, I was one of those on stage. I was part of the Four-Hand-Wheel Irish dance group. The dance turned out well, considering we had little practice. To see some photos of the dance follow the link directly below.

Secondly, the ball that I attended. The Raffles Ball is a 'grand' ball held every year by the Singapore Students' Society. This year it was held at Burswood Hotel. The food however was not very good. The only performance worth mentioning is the can-can dancers who did a fabulous job. The dance was performed accompanied by the Moulin Rouge (movie) medley. I enjoyed myself although not even a drop of alcohol was served.

Over the past few months, or rather just recent months, I've been to a number of places. This I can do due to the two week break which I'm about to run out of. A group of us went to Yanchep National Park for a visit. It was raining the whole day so the expedition wasn't very fun. All the more, my umbrella broke just before the bus arrived and I have to bend it into epic proportions. When we were there, we managed to see the Crystal Cave which was nice, but as I've seen caves before, it looked nothing different than any other underground cave. After that, we had lunch. If you're planning to visit Yanchep, my advice is - bring your own lunch. The inn offered food at a very steep price and service was below average. We waited more than 20 minutes for our pricey fish burgers and missed one of the planned events. All thanks to the inn. The event we missed turned out to be the most exciting as it involved boomerang and spear throwing.

We managed to see an aboriginal dance performance too and bummed around for the rest of the time there, following roads that lead to nowhere as we got lost. Realising that we were heading out of the park instead of within the park, we turned back and found our way to some nice looking buildings. All in all, I feel that the trip by UWA's International Centre could have been better organised.

Kings Park Flower Festival was a good show, even better when we got in free with a family pass. Don't ask me how we got the family pass though, it was thanks to a friend. Anyway, I felt that the flowers were too well arranged and not as natural as what you can see at Araluen. Again, the outing turned out to be a wet affair as it started pouring. We crammed ourselves into a little tent where this botanist was giving a slide show on his many photos taken in the Pilbarra Region. They were nice pictures, most of them, although I get this impression that some photos were taken by sheer luck but explained to be taken on purpose.

The next day after the flower festival, we felt like dancing around the mulberry tree. As it is the fruiting season of the mulberry tree and that we came about the knowledge that UWA has some, we set out on sunny Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, we saw that a chair was readily available for use and so we started plucking nice juicy mulberries from the tree. This was all done in broad daylight, indiscretely as we had no qualms of being caught 'red handed'. The juice of the mulberry fruit is purple and stains the hand that plucks it.

After that, we went for a movie which turned out to be the best that I've ever seen. 'Artificial Intelligence' is, in my opinion a brilliant, emotionally-challenging and thought-provoking movie that should not be missed. This movie has earned a place at the top of my favourite movies list.

Also for those who are interested, I will be going to Canberra for summer research at The Australian National University, thanks to a scholarship the uni offered. My stay there will be about 10 weeks long. I heard it's going to be hot during summer but at least there might not be too many flies.
