19 September 2000 : Yesterday, I went to my very first karaoke. I thought I was going to hate it. I was wrong...
We came back at about 2.30 a.m. in the morning and trust me, it's the first time I've ever been out until so late. The venue was Seoul Karaoke. Don't ask me where it is because I don't have a clue.
We booked a room which I didn't give much thought about until I learnt it will cost us AUD250.00. Luckily the cost will be shared among the 8 of us who went. I even thought about booking a room for myself so that I can practice 'croaking'. But that idea went quietly when I found out how costly it was.
I had a taste of my first SubZero lemon flavoured alcoholic fizzy drink. Not bad. Also tried a little bit of Jack Daniels, whatever that is. I obviously didn't get drunk but I felt quite relaxed though. I couldn't have been drunk since I was quite worried about getting back since one of my friends, who was supposed to drive me back, looked a bit tipsy (to me anyway). Luckily, another friend who did not drink that night drove me back.
We made lots of noise that's for sure. I was quite amazed by my ability to make a fool out of myself because I'm usually the conservative type. One thing I learned; my voice sure needs lots of practice (especially when singing the higher octaves). But I don't think I was that embarrassed as I normally would have been. In fact, I had a great time.
I couldn't complain about the fact that most of the songs were sung in a language I did not understand (i.e. Mandarin and complex Cantonese - you know the more formal Cantonese dialect). I joined in however when there were any parts that needed me to contribute a shout or two. What was funny was that there was this song which began with a guy shouting. So we all shouted our lungs out. Always wanted to do that. Hehe.
I sang quite a few songs though. If I counted correctly with my blurry vision (not because of the alcohol but because of the lighting), I would say I sang more than 6 songs. I actually managed to get 84 for one song (a duet with a friend who is a born singer I would say). But anyway, these grading systems shouldn't be trusted.
All in all, it had been an exciting and new experience
for me. I would have regretted not going. But, it would be quite a while
before I go on another expensive excursion like this one again.
NOTE TO MYSELF : The whole event lasted 5 hours.
Today, I went to watch the worst show I've seen this year - Scary Movie. It's disgusting, stupidly retarded and certainly clichéd.
