The Dover Chronicles
England's Gateway
Lovely Dover, the majestic white cliffs overlooking the Channel. Imagine if you will Richard I, the Lionhearted, King of England. The murder of Archbishop Thomas à Beckett is still fresh in the minds of the people. The Normans conquered England only 100 years ago, and since then England has claimed a vast swath of France: Anjou, Aquitane, and Normandy, amongst others. Calais in Flanders is theirs, Europe's center for textiles. Besides the taxes to pay for your King's participation in the third crusade at the request of the Poniface, it's a damn good time, if you don't mind leeches.
Now witness Dover as a city of constant turmoil. Only a year ago, the good Duke who made his home here was murdered on his way back from London. At the same time, his home and allies were attacked. This left the childless noble's inheritance, and his duchy, to his eldest nephew, Alfred of Hastings. At 19, Duke Alfred is older than some of his fellow nobles, but he was not bred for the tasks of Nobility. Such pettyness bothers him - he is a soldier, and a damn good one. But constant claims by the Duke of Sommerset challenging Alfred's inheritance keep him in the political circle. But at least there seems to be an ally in the Duke of Gloucester, who may want to use this as an excuse to exand his lands into those of Sommerset. Only time will tell.
And now come and see the hidden city of Dover, and its creatures of the night. The raucous sailors from the harbor. The bawdy serving wenches. The leering eye of the hidden Nosferatu. The lament of the Cappadoccians. The guile of the Ventrue. The deceipt of the Lassombra. Welcome to the world of the Medieval Kindred.
