During the Time of the Old Ones, when they had first created the Humans, after their children, the Elves and Dwarves, their creations were abundant in varieties. Unlike the Elves, who were all tall and pale, and dwarves, short, but strong, the Humans varied in their physical appearances. For instance, the humans, who live in the Empire are the height of an Orc, but their resemblance towards Elves are strong, all except for their ears, which are rounded off instead of pointed, and shorter. The Bretonnians are more elf-like in their physical appearance, being more pale, and more devoted to combat. The majority of Estalians have darked skin tones, and darker hair and eyes to those in the Empire and Bretonnia. The Tileans resemble the Estalians, and the Arabians are more darked than the Estalians, and have more darker features.
The Cathayans were large group of nomadic settlers who could never truly settle. They pursued the precious Fire Bird, which was a marvelous flying bird, which was said, to have feathers, as red as blood, with various heat-associated colors, and had a sound, which could entrance any being who heard it. In essence, the Fire Bird was a small phoenix. Ironically, the High Elves had strong attachments to the Phoenix as well, but their were more of a Tradition. The Cathayans did not hunt the Fire Bird, but pursued it. They believed that this creature would lead them to their destination. And so from the beginnings of the first Cathayan Elders, their long trek across the old world began.
The Cathayans had no true leaders, but were the first humans to form a council. Their single tribe was savage, but not war-like. Only when attacked by anyone would they defend themselves to the death. The Council of Elders, as the leaders were called provided the Cathayans with their needs, and leadership, and in return, the Cathayans pledged their loyalty. Back then, even the High Elves had not reached their state of eternal enlightenment. The Cathayans were not as highly developed socially as the Elves, but they were close. At this time, not even Aenarion was born. The Cathayans were lost in their beliefs as they journey past the Current Empire, through the thickly animal infested forests of the Imperial Lands, where they encountered other Humans, which seemed distant, not believing in the Cathayan Fire Birds.
Through their trek, the Cathayans met first
with the Dwarves, who had just begin to forge their Strongholds in the
world Edge mountains, which compared to the modern day keeps, as petty
forts with walls no thicker than a Greenskin’s skull. The Cathayans only
briefly met with the dwarves, trading their valued Jade Stones for the
Dwarf Ore.
The Cathayans proceeded through the World
Edge Mountains, where they halted for several centuries to start a kingdom,
where they had seen the Fire Bird nest. Thus, in the plains of Zharr-Naggrund,
the first Cathayan Kingdom was build. Under their first King, Yuan Fu,
their kingdom was powerless. Small, and poor, they had no true links to
other civilizations. Yuan Fu attempted to reforge his desired kingdom,
but the people began to desert his throne, and soon, within a decade, his
kingdom was at the edge.
To make matters worse for Yuan, the Time of Chaos had begun, with the gateway of the Old Ones collapsed, and the tide of Chaos spreading it’s vile tentacles down upon the world, the Cathayan people fled this horrifying power to the mountains of Mourn, where under the new Leadership of Yuan’s son, Xheng, who was only 15 years of age, began another trek across the Mountains of Mourn into whre Xheng believed, would be the land of the Fire Birds.
Folklore which was told by the Elders of the Cathayan Tribe said that where the Firebirds lived, was the land of the Immortals, where the very gods took on physical forms, to help those that they favored, and would crush the ones who opposed them. The mighty Phoenix was said to be the mightiest creature in the lands, second to the sacred Dragons, which were worshiped amoung the Cathayans. The lands where the sacred creatures lived was a valley as large as anyone could imagine. Protected from harm with the mighty Eclipse Mountains, the Sacred Creatures remained safe within the Valley. The Mythical Phoenix and Jade Dragons were said to have lived in these areas.
The determination of the people was strong. And they crossed every path, hill, river or stream which stood in their way, sometimes, very few survived. This long march started with slightly over 50,000 people. Over their trek to the first Yuan Dynasty Kingdom, their population was at 30,000 but soared to 120,000. This was the only notable achievement of the Yuan Family. Under Xheng, through slow migrations, the Cathayans made the trip to Cathay. With only slightly over 70,000 people, the tribe had survived their pilgrimage to Cathayan, where they became "official" Cathayans.
Upon their arrival, the most redeeming and fulfilling vision was seen. Their eyes viewed the incredible valley. From atop their mountains, which took almost 3 years to climb, they saw their future kingdom of Cathay. In the direct center of the entire valley was the fabled Phoenix Tower, where the Pheonixes and Fire Birds nested. This enormous mountain stretched beyond the clouds, and Xheng was in complete awe of it. But what he saw next would determind the future of his entire people.
His eyes were blinded by a sudden flash of light from the sky. As his eyes ajusted to the light, he saw the image of a being sitting on a throne composed of pure jade stones, gold and diamond crystals. The being wore what appeared to be silk robes, and had numerous other people around him. He was surrounded by maidens of stangely familiar origins around him, who served him. To upper left, right, lower left, and right were four different beings, dressed regally in strange armor, and from there, more and more figures appeared, surrounding Xheng and his advisors.
All of Xheng’s advisors were almost in shock by their vision as the central being stated that he was the one who lead Xheng to this place, sending the fire birds. Xheng was still mesmerized by the situation, as the Being said the final words "I am the Jade Emperor". Xheng immediately gave his most saluting bow, showing extreme respect to the being. The Jade Emperor’s hands lifted as a ray of green light enveloped Xheng and his advisors. As the light hit Xheng, his brown eyes darkened to a more darker brown. His peach skin turned more to a slightly darker estalian skin colour, and his age of 42 seemed to disappear as his body turned young again. As did his advisors, and little did he know, so did his people. His brown hair turned pitch black. Then the light halted and disappeared as the Jade Emperor disappeared.
Xheng was standing before his people, who were all changed! The Jade Emperor had healed all of their wounds, cured all of their sick, and had restored their youth, and lengthened their life times from the average of 60 to 120 years! His old armor, forged from plain metals from the mountains were now completely transformed into a magnificent streaming line of diamond jade mail, His ordinary blade was now a massive sword, with a blade completely composed of a transparent green metal, which was not Jade, but Charonite. Charonite was an incredibly strong metal, which was only to be found, magically created by the High Heavenly mages of the Jade Emperor. It was created from the blood of the greatest heavenly warriors.
Xheng grasped his weapons and his people cheered as he saw a phoenix emerge from the sky, streaming down, leaving a trail of flames behind it, almost creating a trail of burning light down to him. The Phoenix decended and landed on a rock, not far from Xheng. In it’s mouth was a harness of some sort, and on it’s back was a seat, as though the Phoenix was trained to be ridden. He got onto it, and with one swoop, it soared into the air with Xheng on it’s back.
Meanwhile, Xheng’s advisors, the top advisor, Tsing, lead his people down the mountain through a pathway, magically carved through the thick invincible rock, and down to the valley, where they hastily constructed their village, from stock piles of woods, stones, and ropes which were left there, neatly, as though the Jade Emperor had put them there. Three days later, the village was complete, with a large Palace, completely build over a day’s journey away from Xheng, the new Cathayan Emperor.
Another Three days later, Xheng arrived back, where the Phoenix had taken him around the world. Past the Mountains of Mourn, back to the Plains of Zharr Naggrung, where some dwarves were settleing, into the Old World, where he saw a mighty Empire being forged by at one time, friendly Human Tribes. His flight was longest when he flew to Ulthuan, where the incredible High Elves had battled Chaos for more than once. He glided over Lothern, seeing a mighty city created to protect the Ulthuan Inner Sea. His journey passed Lustria, where some Skinks mistook him for the Tounge of Sotek, and raised a religion around his appearance. He concluded by a short visit over the Island Empire of Nippon and back to Cathay, visiting the actual land of the Immortals, which was a great mighty City Empire, which stretched across the sky, floating on clouds, and then, landing at Gnok Kay, his new city home.
*Under the protection of the Heavenly Powers, all the emperors became immortal, under the magic of Heaven. And this explains to why many of the Reigns of the Emperors and Empresses were so long
Xheng was the most powerful warrior of his time, although several say that the later Emperor Kwan was stronger. The beginning of his carreer as a warrior began not long after the fall of the Yuan Kingdom in the Plains of Zharr-Naggrund, where later, the Chaos Dwarves would inhabit. Xheng was renounded for his skillful swordsman skills and leadership. As a warrior, he was undefeated as his people fought past chaotic armies, which unawarely blocked the pathway to their destination.
After his battle at the entrance to the Dragon Spire Mountains, the defending mountains into Cathay, Xheng and his people started the long journey to the top of the mighty mountains. As his people climbed, he did as well. Xheng had his men fully armed, and ready to fight, but as they reached A strange set of plains after a few weeks of climbing, a Firebird was first seen again. As it glided through the sky, his sceptical critics came to silence, as they were now completely convinced that he was correct to assume the leadership.
No sooner had the Firebird left, Xheng and his people set off once again. In a matter of months, and more months, they reached the top of the mountains. At the highest point, there lay a pagoda. A small tower, which inside was the Guardian of the Earth. The short little man approached Xheng, and pointed to the sky with his long staff. Fron the blue sky, a clear image of a tall figure, sitting on a throne was seen clearly. This regal man, was wearing robes of the most incredible skill, and around him stood an entire army of guards and several maidens stood nearby.
Upon the Time of Xheng’s retirement, he had already forged the visioned Cathayan Dynasty, ruled by a single emperor. The Cathayans sent over 1000 years journeying to this land, and had now arrived, prosperous, and peaceful, Cathay was flourishing with the assistance of the Jade Emperor’s Heavenly Empire. When the Emperor Tsing came to power after Xheng left no heir, Cathay had strongly been based in Gnok Kay, where every bit of action occured. Tsing thought it to be quite silly if an Emperor ruled a city, and so, with over 7 million people, he send several colonists to a destination called Sin-Lao, where they would start a new city. And then, more citys would be planned.
Sin-Lao was the new city being constructed on the coast of the Eastern Sea, where tales of mighty Dragon Kings ruled the oceans, while the heavenly Kings ruled the Skies. Tsing wanted to find out of these tales were true, and so his ports began to construct crude ships called Suens, or Junks, which patrolled the coasts of Cathay. From Sin-Lao, there was only one breaking point through the valley’s defensive mountains, which lead to the port. The Junks constantly caught non-valuable fish called po-fish, which were used as food in rare cases, but otherwise provided needed fat, which was needed as a liquid for oil lamps.
Tsing was called the Expander, because of his constant policies of expansion throughout the valley, and little opposed his ideas, Gnok Kay was being overcrowded, and new cities were being planned, other than just Sin-Lao. The cities of Tan, and Sui-Lan sprung up at the borders and dense resourced areas. Inovators began to construct roads which lead from city to city, creating a web of roads. The Phoenix Tower was above all, a sacred place, where no one, without permission of the Emperor would be allowed to enter. Tsing’s Firebird Sounts patrolled and spied on the Old Worlders and High Elves, where they gathered precious information.
During the Imperial Year of 100, The Firebird Scouts discovered an incredible tower being constructed in Hoeth, Ulthuan, where in the future, would be a valuable source of Magical Power. In the Empire, the Cult of Sigmar is formed and Skaven Hordes first penetrate into Lustria, and later into Cathay. Undead hordes attacked the Bretonnian Kingdoms, under the leader Settra, the mummy king. Tsing became concerned about the safety of Cathay, and that this rapid expansion of the Cathayan Empire was at risk of an invasion!
Kwan was known as the Warrior Ruler of Cathay, and the first Cathayan war was fought against the evil Pestilence Skaven, who had invaded Bretonnia only a century ago. Kwan took on the responcibilities of Emperor Tsing to raise the military power of Cathay, but since they had no enemies before, The Emperor Kwan visited the Heavenly Empire for the first time in Cathayan History.
Upon his arrival into the Great Halls of Mists, before the Jade Emperor himself, Kwan pleaded for assistance, incase there would be an attack on Cathay, their young empire could not withstand the force, and crumble. The Jade Emperor simply stated "You shall live, and your kingdom will thrive". Secretly, without notifying Kwan, The Jade Emperor had dispatched his most powerful General, Heavenly King Lee to send a mighty host of Heavenly Warriors to defend Cathay.
General Kwan became extremely frusterated with the lack of assistance which Heaven was supposed to provide. He began to send his people into training. Every single cathayan would be trained, and ready for war. Ironically, this was the situation which the High Elf Phoenix King had done, to protect Ulthuan. He drafted his people, so that anyone could fight. Kwan did the same with his people, and within only a few months of their training, they would be tested.
A Rogue Skaven Warlock, Plagpox had taken his support away from the clans Pestillence, Sky’re, Eshin, and Mogor, to the extent of forming his own massive army of various types of troops from all over the Under-Empire. His own gutter runners had infultrated into the young Cathayan Empire. Kwan’s small and poorly trained army was defeated at first, but his elite force of Phoenix and Firebird Riders had re-attacked the skaven as they beseighed the Cathayan Fortress of Tan, which guarded the only Old World Entrance into Cathay. As Kwan’s troops poured out from Gnok-Kay and Sui-Lan, they suffered deteats, but won some victories, but the bigger picture showed the Skaven Clan emerging stronger than ever, as reinforcements arrived every day from throughout the Under-Empire.
The Jade Emperor Watched from the heavens as he instructed Heavenly King Lee to attack the Skaven at their main tunnel, while the heavenly army would decend on the main Skaven force. Lee did just that, and his troops won almost a unanimous victory at the tunnels, although seriously outnumbered. Meanwhile, while the Skaven Forces were approaching Gnok-Kay, the Capital of the Cathayan Empire, Emperor Kwan took up the Armour of Xheng, and his own personal Blade with his elite guard.
Silence filled the air as the quick rats laoded their Jetzails and Warpfire throwers. But the sunlight was blocked off as shadows filled the field, as the Heavenls decended down on the battlefield. From the skies above, the towering structures of the Heavenly cities formed an arch around the field as thousands of Heavenly troops mounted on their steeds and clouds decended on the hopelessly outnumbered Skaven attackers. Pouring out from their buildings and pagotas, the Heavenly ammased troops continued to battle the vermin, refusing to back down, lead by Plagpox himself, the Skaven Warlocks cast their vile plague saturated spells on the heavenly troops, only having little effectiveness. Kwan, seeing that the Jade Emperor had decided to aid them, gave out a warcry as his own guard and he smashed through the thick walls of Gnok-Kay and spearheaded into a charge which shattered the Skaven army! He himself sliced up over 30 vermin as he mad his way to Plagpox, battleing the skaven in brutal hand to hand combat, he slashed and thrusted his mighty broadsword at the warlock, who scurried out of the way, terror stricken by the Emperor who would not allow escape. Every time Plagpox was out of reach, Kwan turned to another skaven, and sliced them to pieces, as Plagpox found himself facing the Emperor alone. As the armies fought, Plagpox found the emperor charging at him on full strength, and the massive broadsword blade cleaved the warlock in half!
Seeing the loss of their leader, the Skaven panicked and fled in all directions, most still engaged in combat, the Heavenly troops mounded their clouds, and soarded past the retreating vermin, catching up and cutting them down piece by piece!
Kwan was rewarded with a magical Broadsword of his own, Presented to him by the Heavenly Queen Mother and the Goddess of Mercy themselves. The enchanted blade is kept sacred, even now in the Imperial Halls of Triumph, where only in states of emergency and war would the Emperor weild such a powerful weapon, which even dwarfed the mighty Sword of Xheng.
Kwan’s army became the core of his whole empire. He continued to train his empire into a mighty power, which few raiders dared to ever continue. His people filled up the tunnels, which the skaven had used, and sealed them permanently. The Jade Emperor pledged his full protection of Cathay.
After the War against the Skaven, which ravaged the cities of Cathay were halted by the great Warrior Emperor Kwan. But a new era of peace decended on the Cathayans, as Han-Zing, the Inovator came to power, he had much more ideas on expansions and new policies which at first shocked the people, but then was to their complete benefit.
Han-Zing’s first attempt to these new policies was to devepe new weapons for the Cathayan Army, for before, they had fought with simple swords, clumbsy bows and spears, and not until the invention of the Broadsword by Kwan himself, had there been any truly Formitable weapons. He took his examples from the Heavenly Armoury, where there were endless weapons, and almost unlimited supplies of armour.
Thus was the creation of the Great Plaza of Inovators, the Cathayan equialent to the Great Engineering school of Imperial Nuln. The Inovators there developed the Double Hook Swords, which were a strongly defensive weapon, a modification of a hook attached to a long attacking blade with several defensive blades to protect the bearer. More special armour was being created from the metals found at Phoenix Tower, which were incredibly strong, and able to withstand the most powerful of blows.
But one thing which astounded all of the Cathayan people was Han-Zing’s introducing magic. The powerful Heavenly Magics which lead them to their very land was going to be used to protect them as well. Han-Zing himself journeyed to heaven, where he was schooled in the magical arts by the Queen Mother Herself, and returned with the finest of the Heavenly sorcerers to teach the Cathayans some of their complex spells, which could actually rival the powerful sorceries of the Slann Mages of Lustria and the Great Wizards of Ulthuan!
The Plaza of Inovators became the Plaza of Learning, where Engineering, inventing, and sorceries were taught side by side. Only at the Great academy did soldiers train to be able to fight like the true warriors that they were destined to become.
Han-Zing’s sorceries were put to the test when a mysterious traveller from lands unknown ventured to Cathay. Shrouded in thick black robes and an unseen face, the traveller entered the halls of the Emperor’s Palace, getting past the Palace Guards, he stood before the Emperor face to face. He challenged the Emperor to a magical duel. The queen mother, who was present, quietly advised the emperor not to do so. However he ignored her warnings and proceeded, first nearly crushing the traveller with an assortment of earthquakes and avalanches, he hurled hundreds of lightning bolts at the Traveller, who dodged every single one of them. The Queen Mother kept a close watch on the traveller, to see what kind of plan he had. She quickly casted a shield spell on herself, but an attempt on the emperor failed. Then the traveller retaliated by blasting a powerful blue flame at the Emperor, which hit the emperor! One hit only was enough to nearly kill him.
The Queen Mother intervened and dispelled the flames. Her magical staff emitted a powerful bolt of glowing lightning at the Traveller, which seemed to act like hands, in gripping the visitor. The Traveller screamed as the glowing bolts closed in harder and harder. Then, the Queen Mother halted and shoot a magical ball of glowing gold energy at the visitor, knocking the hood off the visitor’s head.
It was a chaos sorcerer! A follower of Slaanesh! Although the Queen Mother called it the Daemon of Seduction, she used all her power to banish him, insinerating him in a blow of magical purifying flames. The Emperor got to his feet, but no words were spoken. As a self punishment of humiliation, he shut himself away for a month, with no contact, and left the empire in the hands of the High Advisor Yang-Tse, whould would become the new emperor after Han-Zing.
This act of humiliation was drug deep into the Emperor, as he suffered severe traumas from the cursed blue flames of the demonic powers. He was in perfect condition, but still believed himself to be cursed. However his acts were not intollerable. He send the first junk expedition outside of Cathay for once, to the southern coasts of the continent, which remained unexplored. His fleet returned with valuable treasures of exquisite animal furs, plants, and most precious of all, Jade! This act rekindled his interest in life and set an expedition of a larger fleet with colonists to the area, to colonize it! In order to fully protect it, he issued orders for a full army of Cathayan Troops to be taken as well, as would Firebird riders who would protect the fleet. He could not afford to lose a hold of this precious land, which he called Yuk Tay, meaning Jade Land. A large fleet of his finest junks brought over 5000 colonists and 8000 troops to the land, where they build a small town on the coast, which supplied the Cathayans who journeyed there. From there, the Cathayans had established their first city outside of Cathay!
Yuk Tay was a triumph for Han-Zing, and he rejoiced with an incredible celebration in Heaven and throughout the empire. There were whole shipments of prized posessions pouring into Cathay, and the riches gathered and piled up to the very top point of the imperial treasury!
During this time, Han-Zing chose a wife, one thing which no other emperor had done before. His wife, the Empress Sui-Lian, was the daughter of one of Han-Zing’s most powerful generals, who decended from the lines of Xheng himself. Upon their marriage, a second celebration concluded the final years of his reign.
For the first time, the Cathayan Empire found themselves ruled by a woman. One thing which the ministers and advisors had protested against. However Han-Zing was still very much alive, and he supported her in her decisions. In fact, the Empress Shi-Lian’s reign was possibly more prosperous than her fathers. Her first acts as the Empress were to strengthen their borders against any possible incursions. Her generals obeyed, although they thought that she was incapable of ordering them without the backing of her father. Shi-Lian knew of their thoughts of her, and she took them well into consideration, when her main advisor, the Chamberlain, was replaced by her excellency, Lui-Ting, another woman in a high position of power.
"The monarchy was becoming a matriarchy" rumored the officials throughout the palaces, but Shi-Lian had no intention of doing so. She only replaced the old Chamberlain with Lui-Ting, because she proved especially efficient in her services as opposed to the lazy Chamberland before her. Shi-Lian sent more expeditions into Yuk-Tay, where they practically annexed the entire area, seizing all the riches. Meanwhile, up in the heavens, Shi-Lian was closely aided by the Goddess of Mercy and the Queen Mother, who aided her and supported her strongly. The Jade Emperor was neutral in these matters, but had respect for the young Empress.
Shi-Lian began to hear reports of the Dwarves, and their inventions of gunpowder, which became a main concern to the Cathayans. They wanted to achieve this goal by themselves, and so the Empress ordered her finest innovators to invent the same weapon. Meanwhile, her borders were under the attack of Nippon Raiders on the coasts of Sin-Lao, the Naval base early established by the Emperor Tsing. Shi-Lian took this opportunity to show, not only to the Nippon, but also to the Cathayans, that she was as formitable as any Emperor before her. Gathering her fleets of junks, they attacked the Nippon city of Miyano, plummeted the city, and Cathay’s armies defeated the attempted invasion the Nippion launched at the Coast, without the aid of the Heavenly Army, which was well aware of the incursions into Cathay.
Shi-Lian furthered her campaigns against the Nippon when she ordered her ships to block the entire island empire of the Nippon. Although the Cathayan fleet was stretched, they were still strong. Her fleets slowly closed onto the main fortress island of Kipni, where they ravaged another island, severly blowing the Nippons back. Shi-Lian had achieved victory above the Nippon, one thing which put her into the views of the advisors as she commanded the fleets herself from Sin-Lao. She herself was at the invasion on the coast, and assisted in the planning of the attack. Now she stood at the very top of the list of rulers, as the most powerful woman in the world! She followed her reign by establishing more cities through the cathayan lands, and at the near-end of her reign, almost all of the Cathayan Valley was under Cathayan powers.
But the empire was now getting very large, and required more than one ruler. Shi-Lian issued a new form of ruling. She had her top generals take charge of 4 different districts of the Empire. One to rule the north, south, east and west. She herself would take charge of the Central, Gnok-Kay Province. Her four generals would be issued their own provincial armies, and their own provincial fleets (if ports existed). The Liten River stretched throughout the empire, and surrounded the Phoenix Tower would be used heavily for transport through the empire by Junk, or by faster means.
Tang was one man who never truly believed in Shi-Lian’s policies of separate rule of the empire. He believed that the Emperor was of the Supreme power, and that everyone was below. He himself dispised the heavenly officials who were assigned on a permanent basis from Xheng to watch over the Cathayan Empire. Tang had distrust in the heavenly powers, and believed that they were using Cathay as a puppet state. He renounced the Heavenly control over Cathay and expelled the Heavenly officials. Nonetheless, Shi-Lian was furious at this decision, and still had influence through Cathay, as did her father, Han-Zing who was still alive!! Tang refused to have Cathay controlled by heavenly rulers and united the separate states into a single governent.
Meanwhile, the Jade Emperor was quite upset by the Emperor’s decisions. He send the Goddess of Mercy as a representative of him to negotiate back their positions in the Cathayan Government. The Goddess returned with a response of war which Tang had declared upon Heaven. The Jade Emperor soon discovered that Cathay was not the weak power that it was at the Skaven Wars, but was now strong enough to repel an attack, directly on heaven, and take the offensive. Secretely, Heavenly King Lee, with the Emperor planned an invasion to restore order and put Shi-Lian’s new son, Han-Lian onto the Throne.
Shi-Lian’s growth of Cathayan power was wrongly used by Tang as he begun the war by making an alliance with the Nippon against the Cathayan Loyalists and the Heavenly Armies. Nippon and Tang’s soldiers first marched through the borders of the Western province, which was under the control of Shi-Lian’s forces. The attack was repulsed, but Tang was not defeated. He regrouped his force and attacked once more through a weaker point through the neutral South Province, which he had invaded mercilessly. The Heavenly armies meanwhile poured from the skies and decended on the Imperial Palace at Gnok-Kay, where Shi-Lian gladly retook the throne. Tang was not defeated at this point either, but attacked and blocked off the ports to Jade Land. Without the money from Jade Land, he thought that Shi-Lian’s forces would mutiny, but this was the opposite affect. Shi-Lian told her troops, that if they did not liberate Jade Land, they would lose the treasures which made Cathay so powerful.
In responce, her troops moved directly to the city of Mao, where Tang’s main army was holding and defending fiercely. Shi-Lian used the first Cathayan rockets against the Tang army, where after blowing through the walls of the fortress-city, surged inwards and slaughtered the traitorous and Nippon forces. Tang had to retreat to the coast, where under pursuit by Heavenly and Loyalist forces, made a scratching escape to Nippon, where he was cleverly hunted down by a heavenly guard, and assasinated.
Through the times of Anarchy, the Cathayan Empire was suffering from two powers, the Tang Empire, and the Cathayan Empire. Few records were made during this time, due to the constant battles for the capital city of Gnok-Kay. However the only event which united the states was the Dark Elf Encounter, which united both sides back to the single Empire, under the Emperor Xen.
The only major noticed record taken, was the Dark Elf Encounter was a ravaging war, which accidentially united the entire Cathayan Warring states, under Empress Shi-Lian, and Emperor Tang. Through the first month, the two factions, the Loyalists and the Anarchists, were fighting, when Dark Elf Scounts were spotted in the hills. At first, mistaken for High Elves, with poor fashion choices, but eventually, thick clouds of crossbow bolts were rained upon the two armies. Upon this, immediately, the Two Rulers united, and charged the Dark Elves. This attack, was at the coast of Cathay, where a fleet of 8 Black Arks had landed ashore, with their Harpies and Hydras.
The battle was won with the added assistance from Heavenly Armies, who slaughtered the shreiking wailing frenzied Witch Elves, and forced the Dark Elf armies back to the shores, where the remains of the Cathayan Fleet sunk the Black Arks, with the assistance of the Heavenly Magics.
When Xen was only a minor troop in the Palace Guard, he observed several Generals during their plans. He learned their skills and eventually was able to tie them into a single formula. He was an intellectual minded man, and ruled the longest reign of 500 years through his intelligence and his incredibly cunning against the Dark Elves.
During the Times of Anarchy, the Cathayan Empire suffered much. But it wasn’t until the arrival of the Dark Elves which fully united the two factions. They had heard rumours of Dark Elves, who attacked Ulthuan more than once, and had infultrated into the southern seas, which lead to Cathay. Xen, being a reinuter of the Cathayan Empire, took onto himself to re-establish power, as to reequip the entire armed forces of Cathay, and to reestablish links with Heaven. Although without a doubt, they would no cooperate at first, but he had to plead with heaven, explaining the entire situation. And after much negotiation, the Jade Emperor once again, pledged his endless support to the Cathayan Empire.
However, during Xen’s reign, the power of the High Elves was becoming more and more bothersome to the Cathayans. Upon their dispatchment of a mighty host of Junks, the General Cheung was sent on behalf of the Emperor of Cathay to meet the High Elves. Upon their arrival at the High Elf Fortress of Dawn, which "guarded" the entrance to Cathay Upon the discovery of this formitable Fortress, the General demanded an explanation of their preset location. The Elves, lead by the explorer Tamonus, responded by saying that the Dark Elves have looked towards the South Lands for new areas to destroy. They took it upon themselves to secure the passages from one side to another. The High Elves appologized for the inconvienience, and offered a large shipment of valuable gems in compensation.
Xen himself went to meed the Elves and when he arrived in Ulthuan, he was the only Cathayan every to leave the empire. He brought with him exquisite gifts of Jade, Silk and valuable stones to the Phoenix King, Morvael the Impetuous. The Phoenix King pledged his eternal friendship with the Cathayan Empire.
Xen returned to Cathay with incredible happiness. His people have made contact with the outside world, and had not needed difficult negotiations. The Cathayans an the High Elves were not pledged together with a formal agreement of trade and friendship. And from that moment onwards, hundreds of Elf ships were pouring into the Cathayan’s largest harbours.
Xen sent thousands of his finest warriors to escort a trememdous colonial effort in the Old World. There, he rediscovered the Dwarves, who have amassed their incredible keeps and fought off Greenskin hordes countless times. He and the Dwarf King opened more trade relations and received a valuable gift of Bugman’s Finest Brew. In return, Xen offered the Dwarves a precious shipment of Ilthimar, the Elven Precious metal. The Dwarf King was so rejoiced with this gift that he awarded Xen with an additional shipement of their experimental weapons: Rockets. Xen was incredibly friendly with the Dwarf King, and both remained friends for a long long time.
When Xen arrived in The Empire, his force was caught in a war between anaracle forces in the Empire. There were three emperors, and these three wanted to rule the entire land. Xen withdrew his forces into the Grey Mountains, where the Dwarves offered the ruined Keep of Karak Mazar to the Cathayans. The Cathayans renovated the city in their designs and established a free Trading City, which rivaled Mareignburg in the Empire. From there, Bretonnians, Imperials, Dwarves, and Elves all went, to trade for the valued Silks and Jade Stones that the Cathayans had to offer, and in return, they received Bretonnian foods, Imperial Armaments, Dwarf weapons, Elf Metals, and even Greenskin. . . things. The Heavenly convoys of clouds carried goods from Cathay within weeks, and constant shipments were headed for the Old World. Their city, called Sing-To, was ruled by the Emperor’s son, Ming.
The Emperor Wu was one of the most compoundly antagonistic of the decent Emperors. Unlike his predecessor Xen, the Uniter and Explorer, Wu stressed that isloation is the only way for Cathay to survive, and that through it’s thick trade with Ulthuan and the Old World, they would jeapordize their wealth and status as a great power. Wu began by sharply cutting off trade from the west, and isloating Cathay. He issued taxes on vessels which entered the Cathayan Sea, which the Elves protested. The city of Sing-To in the Old World became abandoned, and everything taken back to Cathay.
Emperor Wu wanted Cathay to become strong again, but he also wanted Cathay to be rich. The only way to be rich, was to conduct trade, and the only way to become strong, was to stay isolated. But he knew he could only do one thing at a time. The only exploration which he did conduct was send the famed explorer Yin-Tuan into Lustria, one thing which he and Xen agreed on. Yin remained in Lustria until he returned in late 1693. Wu maintained a strong governent, with the support of his council of advisors and generals. He maintained a lasting relationship with the Heavenly Empire, although the Jade Emperor disapproved of his Isolationist points of view. For the first time, the Jade Emperor began sending troops down to earth for the protection of Cathay, coresponding to the Emperor’s requests for assistance.
After his father, living the longest reign in Cathayan History of nearly one thousand years, he reestablished his connections with Ulthuan, where their Phoenix King, Finubar, and he shared many common interests. Mind toured the entire Old World and resettled in Sing-To, where the city once again provided trade with the Old World and Ulthuan to Cathay. During his reign, Ming had no enemies, and kept Cathay Strong.
Ming turned the mighty war fleet, into a defensive trading fleet, which was the only armed fleet in the world which traded regularly. He only armed it to attack the Dark Elf Raiders which preyed on the weak looking Junks, which hid in fact several rocket launchers and had crews of troops ready to attack if needed. Under Ming, the Cathayan Empire had expanded past the Southern Coasts of Cathay and deep into the South Lands. Only there did their internal trades between provinces grow. Ming put into practice what the great Empress Shi-Lian’s division of the Empire. Each province was governed by a great King, with his own council of advisors and Heavenly Generals. They all had fleets, ports, and armies.
