Like I stated earlier, Curse Of The Spawn is a monthly ongoing title also by image comics. It was started when Spawn was up to issue nr. 53, so that's about 4 1/2 years of Spawnie-boy. The idea behind it was that average Spawn readers are generally age 12 and up, and curse of the spawn should appeal to those who keep writing and asking good 'ol Toddie boy to turn the heat up on the concept of the spawn character. The writer for the book is Alan Mcelroy (he also wrote the screen play for the spawn-movie and most of the HBO-scripts). Artistically, we have DC man Dwayne Turner and Danni Miki, who should be given a statue for his earlier work. Curse of the Spawn is a more spookier, darker, scarier series and for a big relief for our older audiences (like myself) who can easily enjoy a more complicated story....
Issue 1-4 covered the story of a new hellspawn: daniel Llanso. When he was a child he murdered his father because he was beating on him and his mother. The story is set in a dark futur, the armageddon war was won by hell and instead of a pope in the vatican we have an anti-pope living in Nu-Vatican city....Way cool !!!! nice storyline and great art make this one of the best stories I've read so far, get your hands on them if they are still around !!!
Issue 5-8: SUTURE !!!! She let's serial killers have it bigtime !!! Detective Sparks together with Sam and Twitch as private dicks are on the case of this nice girl (Gretchen Culver) who is killed in a traffic accident while fleeing from John Mawbley, a serial killer. While being half dead, she is raped by a couple of scumbag police and ambulance escorts....Gretchen becomes Suture and goes after serial killers and her rapists.....Even better story and artwork then the first 4 issues of the Curse.
Issue 9-11: Angela's origin.....Nice story about the origin of Angela, a bit strange perhaps (she exists out of 5 tortured souls who merge) and there are a couple of contradictions with what we know of Angela from the Spawn storyline...still better than your average comic...
Issue 12-14: Jessica Priest.....In the movie, it wasn't chapel who killed Spawn, but Jessica Priest, a normal married housewife but with a nice twist, she works for the CIA as one of their best agents.....In these stories, she is send out by Jason Wynn to retrieve some sort of Heat-16 module, the storyline could be better but the art is very good !!!
Issue 15-16: Abdiel (means: servant of God)...probably one of the first Angels....he get's the job of terminating Malebolgia before this creature can acquire the next soul for his army (yes yes...All Simmons), you can guess the outcome of that story right !!! Nevertheless, GREAT story and as always, Dwayne Turner in good shape !!!!
Issue 17-19: Tony Twist.....The Italian mob wasn't very pleased with the destruction of Overtkill and destroy Twistelli's business.....The Vatican Secret Police, The Curse, Cogliostro...they are all in these 3 nice issues....you can see what kind of man Twistelli really is, he isn't all made of iron but has feelings too but in the end, his origin comes to the surface, that one of a mean motherf***ing mob monster who refuses to go out without putting up a fight !!!
COTS Issue 20 Summary: Raenis, born of the mortal Ariena and the God Cronus was happily living on an island of Centaurs when the jealous God Hades laid waste to them in an attempt to rid the world of a future ruler. The new Hellspawn battles his way up from the underworld through the waters of Oceanus, determined to reign in place of Zeus and avenge the death of his father, himself and his childhood friends, the Centaurs. Meanwhile on Mt. Olympus, Zeus senses the threat of the new Hellspawn and prepares for the impending battle.
COTS Issue 21 Summary: In short: Raenius defeats Zeus and rules the universe !!
COTS Issue 22 Summary: Wow, greatest story I read so far from this series !! Ryan Hatchett comits suicide but instead of winding up dead he finds himself in a strange world ruled by the Zombie Spawn where. He's bitten by a zombie and becomes HATCHET, executioner of the dead !!!
COTS Issue 23 Summary: The Overt-Resurrection: We meet the brother and creator of Overt-kill, Dr. Eylan Hessman, we learn about Overt-kill's origin and the relationship with his brother. After Spawn had destroyed him, his brother searched for every little overt-piece in the NY alleyways and eventually creates overt-WAR, who destroys him !
COTS Issue 24 Summary: The Overt-Resurrection: Jonathan Able Unger, aka Pandemic, a US government employee, who had been betrayed by his own conspiracy-government leaves a high-guarded detention facility in order to destroy overt-war but when he finds the All-Simmons searching overt-dude, he tells him that All Simmons can be found at his former detention center. Overt-kill then destroys the whole compound.
COTS Issue 25 Summary: Heart of hell: Harley has problems at home, at school, his best friend asks the girl out which whome he is in love, and worst of all, he's got an inner hellspawn !!! His inner-demon takes over and kill's everyone, including his beloved one (great story, superb artwork)
