Piers Anthony writes a hilarious series about a magical place called Xanth. Not your standard Fantasy series. Even though his writing is light and filled with puns, he tends to deal with many serious topics. I've read all the books in the series and I can't help but suggest them . The first book in this series was called A Spell for Chameleon . Piers Anthony has written many other great series as well including The Adept Series and The Incarnations of Immortality.
