Training at the Jedi Academy

Training  to become a  Jedi is not an easy life.  The challenges  one faces will  be wrought  with many dangers,  and the seductions of the  Dark Side are  always the most nefarious danger of all.  To ensure that Jedi are not only trained, but trained properly (and Jedi characters are played appropriately),  some structure has been set into place.

THE JEDI ACADEMY ON DANTOOINE

Around them the window screens displayed vast plains of grassland and spiky trees.  Purplish hills rolled across the distant horizon.  A herd of small beasts roamed across the savanna; in the air a cluster of bright balloon-like things, either plants or rudimentary animals, drifted about; a few had snagged on pointed branches of the spiky trees.  Two moons, one lavender and one greenish, soared overhead.
"We established one of our first Rebel bases on Dantooine.  It has a mild climate, abundant life-forms, plenty of water.  A few nomadic tribes roam up and down the coasts of the ocean, but for the most part the planet is uninhabited."

~ Dark Apprentice, pgs 211-212; Kevin J Anderson, Bantam Spectra 1994

With the threat of the destruction of Alderaan, Princess Leia once told Grand Moff Tarkin that he would discover the secret rebel base on Dantooine.  While her ploy did not actually work, that mention of the world was the first time Star Wars fans would ever hear the planet's name.  Since then it has been used by authors several times, and as evidenced in the passage above it is a pleasant world.

After the destruction of the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV (see the 2nd Battle of Yavin for details), the decision was made to move the Jedi Academy to Dantooine.  There it has a strong neighbor in a primary Alliance base.  Only the combination of several Imperial Navy task forces would be able to push the Rebel Alliance from Dantooine at this time, so the Academy is decidedly safer there than it was on Yavin IV.

The Jedi Academy is situated near rolling hills and a forest to the West and North, with gardens and groves of fruit trees to the South, and a delightful beach on the ocean to the East.  Temperate weather and a mild climate year round make this a veritable paradise for both the Alliance base personnel and the Jedi who train here.  Two hangars serve the needs of the academy.  One is quite large and holds personal vehicles of Jedi Knights and students.  The other is smaller and holds the few vehicles "owned" by the academy.  A second use for the smaller hangar is for Jedi Masters:  it has become a favorite make-shift classroom for several of them.

MASTER & APPRENTICE

We saw in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, the system in which a Jedi Master has his Padawan Learner.  That system was simply a master/apprentice system.  Though the Padawan was apprenticed to one Master in particular, they continued to be trained by various Jedi to gain a variety of perspectives.  It would be the responsibility of the Padawan's Master to tie those perspectives together and provide a foundation in his learning. As the Jedi Order is rebuilt, it is crucial to have efficient techniques for training up and coming Jedi.  Of course, the appearance of these rules parallel the new series of books from Del Rey, but the timelines are at a similar place (the Del Rey novels are 19 years after Return of the Jedi, the BZ is 22 years) so it kind of makes sense anyway.
Under these guidelines, players choosing to play a Jedi character must select a Master.  That Master MUST play an integral role in that Jedi character's training, with perhaps 10% of all posts showing interaction with that Master (believe me when I say I'll be a stickler on this).  At the time of character creation, the player will select a Master, either from the list of approved Masters, or come up with a new Master of their own (subject to the approval of SCUD).

The Instructors

This is a short (and incomplete) list of the Masters and Knights available for use as instructors at the Jedi Academy on Dantooine.  Many of these characters are found in the novels, and a few were created personally by me or other players.  You will find that some of these characters have the notation "A member of the Jedi Council" in the short descriptions below.  Not all Jedi Masters are members of the council (which has twelve members), and a member of the council does not necessarily have to be a Jedi Master (though that was rare, even in the Old Republic).
Please note:  A Jedi Master/Knight may have a name or list of names at the bottom of their profile under a heading ("Apprentices").  Obviously any names found at the bottom of the profile will be the name/names of any apprentices the character has.  Remember, a Jedi Master will not have more than two to three apprentices (and rarely more than one).

Of course, there are other Instructors at the academy (never more than two or three students per Master), but I'm not going to sit here and think of them all at once.  If you have an idea for another Jedi Instructor (not necessarily to teach your character, but just one to add to this list), please submit it through the character submission form.  Don't forget to add your name to the submission - you'll receive points!

THE ROLE OF SKYWALKER

Think of Luke Skywalker as the Headmaster of the Academy.  He oversees all training, sits at the head of the Jedi Council, and provides insight and specialized training where needed.
He has also gone out into the galaxy on numerous occasions to actively recruit for the academy, though this is uncommon in recent years.
Finally, his is the final decision during the Jedi "Trials of Passage" in which a Jedi is promoted from their Apprenticeship to Knighthood.

THE ROLE OF THE JEDI COUNCIL

The Jedi Council provides direction for the Jedi Knights of the galaxy.  Their combined wisdom is in place to give structure and insight to training, establish the need for Jedi intervention in any given situation (and decide which Jedi should be given the task), stand in judgment over the actions of rogue Jedi, and administer the "Trials of Passage" that allow promotion of a being from Jedi Apprentice to Jedi Knight.  The Jedi Council hesitates when faced with a situation involving galactic politics, but they are not unwilling to speak their collective mind.

Okay, Get in touch with me if you have any questions.  I realize I've left this rather vague, but it was even more arbitrary and ambiguous before I stepped in with this.
