Delhi cinema fire stampede leaves 60 dead
By Rahul Bedi in New Delhi.
AT least 60 people, including children, died and more than 200 were injured in a fire at a New Delhi cinema, and in the stampede that followed it. Officials said about 40 of the injured were critically ill.
Police said the fire broke out at about 5pm local time after a transformer exploded in the basement of the newly- renovated cinema in Green Park, an up-market area of the Indian capital.
Witnesses said the fire spread to cars parked nearby and within minutes had engulfed the cinema where a capacity crowd was watching the premiere of Border, a film about the India-Pakistan war of 1971.
Heavy rush-hour traffic hampered the emergency services, and the fire was not brought under control for two hours. The injured were taken to hospital in police cars and motorised rickshaws.
Police officials said there was nothing to suggest that the fire was anything other than an accident.

1 June 1999 - 42 die in Delhi slum fire
16 charred to death in a fire in Old Delhi - 01st June 1999 - At least 16 persons were burnt to death and over 70 injured when fire erupted in a transport godown in the congested Lal Kuan area of the Walled City area of Old Delhi on Monday afternoon. The toll may go up as 30 persons suffered 100 per cent burns. Fourteen shops and a nursing home in the vicinity were also gutted. - Eyewitnesses said the fire started after an explosion in the New Aligarh Transport, a transport house where highly inflammable chemicals had been stored, allegedly without a license. Fire soon engulfed nearby shops and a dust-storm which swept through the city around the same time fanned it further.

10 choked to death in Delhi - STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE - www.thestatesman.org
NEW DELHI, Jan. 2, 2000 — Ten people, including four children and two women, were choked to death when smoke emanated from a house fire at Khureji, east Delhi, late last night. The deceased were ground floor tenants of the building owned by Mr Jitender Sharma. They were fast asleep when the fire broke out around 1 am. It all started with a blast in the electricity meter of a tarpaulin shop in front of the building and spread to another shop of electrical goods. The poisonous smoke emanating from the fire choked the tenants in their room.
The only escape route for the victims, a narrow corridor between the two shops on fire, was closed by the pulled down shutter. "The shutter was so hot that we were unable to pull it up. It was broke open with the help of bamboo sticks," said Maheed, a resident. Almost half-an-hour was taken to break the shutter, but by that time those inside the building were choked.
