Woman, two children perish in fire - By A Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A woman and her two children were charred to death after a fire broke out at their residence-cum-godown in the Shahdara area of northeast Delhi on Sunday night, fire brigade officers said. The woman, Babita (30) and her two daughters - Indira (7) and Swati (5) - were burnt to death when the flames spread through their double-storey building in the Shastri Park area at about 10 pm, the officers said. ``The building was also used as a godown for storing inflammable material including foam and paper, which fuelled the fire, ´´ an officer said. He said all the three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.
A total of 22 fire tenders fought for an hour to control the blaze, which was described as medium by the fire brigade. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, sources said.
WALL COLLAPSE: In the second incident of wall collapse in the Capital within two days, a construction worker was severely injured in the Zakir Nagar area of south Delhi on Monday afternoon. Area police sources said the incident took place at about 1 pm when the wall came crashing down, trapping Shahzada under the rubble. Fire service rescue team managed to pull him and was taken to the Jeewan Nursing home in Sunlight Colony, where he is said to be battling for his life.
This is the second such incident in Delhi in the last two days. On Sunday, a wall being constructed on the third floor of house in the Bhadola village of Adarsh Nagar, in northwest Delhi, came crashing down killing a two-year-old child and injuring six others, including four children and the victim's mother. In both instance, area police have claimed poor quality of construction material was the possible reason behind the collapse.
