Radio Communications Procedures in Regards to family and neighborhood safety. |
|||||||||||
Many families today own and use the widely available two way radio "walkie talkie" communications units. These radios can assist family members on a variety of functions. Common uses include: vehicle caravans, amusement parks, vacations, and everyday household use.
What you may not know is that these radios can be overheard by EVERYONE elso who owns a radio!
Many of these radios offer so-called "privacy codes" Do not let this fool you! These codes do NOTHING for privacy! All these "codes" do is prevent YOU from hearing OTHERS! If someone in the area does NOT have one of these codes set, they can hear EVERY WORD you say!
As such, it is of the most vital importance that you do not reveal sensitive information over the radio.
Educate your children. Child molestors, kidnappers, and such own these radios too!
Tips for communications security!
Never allow your children to give their names. Never allow your children to reveal address or phone numbers. Never allow your kids to give their locations in a manner they could easily be found by strangers. Develop a code of sorts, saying "I am at 'location A'' and such. Parents always keep a radio to monitor the behavior of your kids. |
|||||||||||
Additionally, keep common sense in mind. Never reveal any information that could be of use to a criminal.
Bear in mind a few government rules:
If your radio has more than 14 channels, you MUST stay on channels 1-14. You may only operate on low power Channels above 14 require a license from the FCC. Federal regulations require all users to identify with their FCC assigned call sign every 15 minutes. Since this information is public information, you can be located by your call sign. As such ADULTS are the only persons who should operate on channels 15 through 22, and use their FCC assigned GMRS call sign. Unlicensed persons should stay on channels 1-14 (only operating on LOW power), and remind their children not to stray from these channels! ![]() Questions? Comments? Email: gmrspage@yahoo.com |
