C
lergy are often so very much absorbed in the needs of their parishes that, without direct spiritual discipline, they fail to take heed of their own souls. The Rule of Saint Benedict requires that each live a balanced life and that caring for oneself is needed. The Benedictine way of life fits the life of a priest very nicely, and over the centuries clergy have found the Benedictine discipline to be the answer to their spiritual needs.A Priest Oblate is required first of all to follow his canonical obligations and then the recommendations listed previously for regular Oblates. He should provide the Superior of the Order with a copy of the Rule of Life he has developed for himself in view of the time his parish needs require.
He should make at least one retreat a year, and make a short report on it to the Superior.
He should offer Masses on all Benedictine Holy Days, and include the name of our holy Father Benedict in the Collect of the Saints, when appropriate, and in the Confiteor.
He should preach at least one sermon a year on the religious life in general, with special thoughts on Benedictine life, and if possible to give the collection on that day as a gift in love to the Order.
He may if he finds it helpful, want to start a Chapter within his parish of those who, like himself, may feel the need of Benedictine spiritual direction on the journey of faith.
A large Benedictine Cross/Medal are sent as a tangible token of the affiliation with the Order.
