Ecological Effects of Species Introductions and Extinctions

You are likely aware of some facets of the situation facing many of the pacific species of salmon and steelhead in BC.

You also may know that each run of salmon is genetically unique, adapted for the specific conditions of its spawning stream. Well, presently 106 genetically unique stocks are extinct, and 214 more are currently threatened with extinction (from a 1991 reference).

This loss and potential loss of genetic variation has some serious implications for the future of our salmon, as well as biodiversity in general.
