Slide 14

Ecological Effects of an Intensification of Stress:
The implications of ecological stress are represented by the intensity of environmental stressors that cause many responses in terms of the structure and function of ecosystems. Some of these stressors may have short-term or long-term effects on ecosystems and wildlife.

Short-Term Effects:
When an ecosystem is subjected to a substantial intensification of pollution or another stress, it may be capable of absorbing the increased stress without undergoing measurable changes. This represents short-term effects.

Long-Term Effects:
Whereas with long-term effects little or no ecological development may be sustained, especially in extreme cases. Pesticide use in agriculture causes many serious, long-lasting and irreversible effects upon the environment. Pesticides damage the environment by reducing the number of vital minerals that are available to plants, destroying the natural balance of organisms in an ecosystem, contaminating ground and surface water, and creating "super races" of insects that are immune to pesticides.
