Biodiversity:

Ecological Effects of Species Introductions and Extinctions

by Waterose et. al.

Slide 12

Three examples of extinctions specific to BC:

  1. The Dragon Lake Whitefish was a species of whitefish that existed in Dragon Lake near Quesnel. It is thought to have been an example of speciation in progress, but was not able to be studied because... it was wiped out due to intentional lake poisoning, which was at one time a tactic used to eliminate unwanted (uneconomic) species.
  2. A rare Large marble subspecies of butterfly once existed only in three known populations on Vancouver and Gabriola Islands. Only thirteen specimens exist in museums around the world. The last one was collected in 1908.
  3. The Dawson Caribou was a species of woodland caribou that existed on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). It disappeared in 1935.
