Slide 11

The Passenger Pigeon was an extremely abundant bird that was common across North America. It was not a species specific to BC, but its range did extend west to the North Thompson River. Much like story of the Bison, there are reports of flocks of passenger pigeons that darkened the skies and took several days to pass by. There were more passenger pigeons than all of the other species of North American birds combined!

The demise of the species is attributed to the loss of habitat because of land cleared for farms, but even more deadly was the fact that they were an easy target for hunters; they were hunted to extinction quite rapidly. The last account of a wild passenger pigeon was in 1900. In 1909, the Cincinnati zoological gardens had the last three, and by 1910, only one female was left.

The last passenger pigeon, named Martha, died on September 1st, 1914 at the age of 29.
