IAN, MILES, & STEWART COPELAND OPEN BEVERLY HILLS RESTAURANT WITH CELEB FRIENDS

Ian Copeland, is opening a rock and roll restaurant in Beverly Hills called Backstage Cafe with his brothers Stewart, former drummer iof the Police, and Miles, who manages Sting, Belinda Carlisle, and Paul Carrack. Other celebrities and music executives to invest in the Backstage Cafe will be announced at a later date.

The rock- themed restaurant will be influenced by both Stewart and Turner's musical backgrounds, in addition to the industry experience of Ian and Miles. Ian is the President of Frontier Booking International, which represents such acts as the Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, and Squeeze, while Miles is the founder of IRS Records and an artist manager.

"This will be the backstage of your dreams," says Ian Copeland. "It's the first restaurant run by people in the music for people in the music business." (Well, other than Billboard Live, which, unlike Backstage Cafe, is also a venue for bands to perform in.)

Backstage Cafe, which will feature international cuisine, will be filled with over 25 years of music memorabilia from a variety of artists, which includes gold records, band merchandise, and of course, backstage passes. The restaurant will also be hosting a monthly music- and- fashion- themed photography exhibition, with the first one to kick off on Oct. 16, the day of the restaurant's opening, and run through Nov. 30.

Acetate CD's are a common thing these day's. Beware there are a lot of fake ones around especially since Philips made his new CD-R for a reasonable price of $800.00 or 400 pounds.

Anyway I had the luck in picking up a nice MCM Networking (UK) acetate CD with the following desciption:

Coca Cola Level I radio concerts month 8 week 29 (from 1993), looks like an official Tape to Tape (the company) gold acetate.

Bands are The Lemonheads/living colour and most of all Sting. Rare thing about this is that there are live tracks (Wallsend 1991 accoustic session) which were never official released.

Sting tracks are : All this Time/Mad about you/Ain't no sunshine/Fragile/Message in a bottle, and a small pieces from an interview.

I believe this was never broadcasted in 1993 since I heard nobody talking about it or have I never seen any tapes floating around with this recording and do correct me if I'm wrong ofcourse.

From: Steve Kaniowski

The 15 years of following Sting's music and spending an obscene amount of money on his material has finally paid off.

Here's my story :

Tuesday 29th October State Theatre - Sydney

My friends and I were getting into the music, when he looks into the crowd and says "Hey everybody, check out the POLICE t-shirt in the 5th row"........ Shit that's me !

I turned around to face the audience (most of them sitting down) and jumped up, while they threw a big spotlight on me........The crowd went bezerk, yelling and cheering !!! (a lot of POLICE fans I guess)

Sting then said " OK you can come up !!!" WOW !!!!! - Finally I meet the man who's music and ideology has influenced my life !!!!

He also picked out a girl from the other side. I went to shake his hand and he says " AW cummon, give us a hug "I think he knew I was his biggest fan.

We talked a fair bit and cracked some jokes....... got the crowd going !!! He asked if we were together... I saw my opportunity and said in the microphone...... "NO, but girls I'm single !!"...The crowd cheered ! He started talking to the girl... "excuse me Sting.." I interupted jealously "Did'nt you notice my POLICE belt buckle as well ?" "Yeh.. I noticed that.. where did you get it from? " He replies " Mate... I've been your biggest fan for a lot of years.... I've even got POLICE undies ! " "Show us ! " he said chuckling to himself... (I made him smile.... WOW) The crowd roared !

We chatted some more..... he then asked if we want to sing...... (silly question).

We then sang "I'm so happy" of which any true fan knows all the words to.

I thought I went rather well and the fact that he raised his eyebrows when I kept up with him in the middle section "Something about the universe and how it's all connecteeeeeeeeeeeeeed" He also kept knodding me to really get into it........ WOW ! I think he did'nt mind my singing.... This was all too much !

The girl blurted out 1 line at a 100 decibel croak and did'nt do it again, she just danced after that........ Good effort though !

The song finishes and I added my solo bit at the end "I'm so haaaaapyyyyyyyy !..... What a buzzzz. I felt right at home !

The crowd kept cheering. Sting took us under his arms and we kept bowing for ages. He showed the girl off stage and I went again to shake his hand. "STING , I've been your biggest fan since this high....This made it all worth while"

He grabs me and gives me a big hug and A PECK ON THE CHEEK !! He gets back on the microphone and says "THAT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE KISSED AN AUSTRALIAN GUY !!!!!" The crowd again went absolutely bezerk!!!

I walked back to my seat and people were slapping me on the back yelling out "STEVE YOUR A LEGEND !!" I even got slapped on the butt by a couple of girls.....!

I was a celebrity for the rest of the night. People were comming up to me and saying how excellent it was. I was surrounded by people outside the theatre. I was on such a high it was like I was on drugs !

At the end I actually met a nice Irish girl and we went out........! How often does something like this happen ???????

Even to this day.... discussions have come up with friends about the concert and people I have NEVER met recognize me... hehehe

Do you ever think with the tour there would be a stage guest he would remember ??? Would he remember me if he read this ?.....sigh........ who know's ?

I wish it was recorded on video....Even a photogragh or something....

Nevermind, a memory to last forever !

jim's comments on the set: There were rumors going around that when Gordy Sumner goes on tour he rarely changes the set. After the show, I surfed some Sting web sites (highly recommended: The Soul Pages) and confirmed that his set in Manila was identical to his US shows, right down to the scheduling of the encores. Even the audience participation part (asking someone up on stage to sing "I'm so Happy ...") is a Sting concert staple. Talagang naka-program lahat. Thus no matter how much some people were shouting for more Police oldies like "King of Pain" or "Message in a Bottle", I guess it wasn't ever meant to happen for this show. Since this was an album promotional tour, "Mercury Falling" songs dominated the set. As for the rest, I thought the selection could've been better - though I suppose with over ten years of solo material and six years worth of Police oldies to choose from, whittling down the list to a 3 hour show might have not been easy.

Next stop on the Asian tour: Taipei

Highlights: the brass section was a riot to watch - being on wireless mics meant they could run around on stage acting like clowns - while playing. (excellent solos too - clowning around didn't diminish the quality of their playing one iota) Parliament oughta get some ideas from these guys. Other high point: Kenny Kirkland's kilometric long jazz piano solo on "When the World Is Running Down" - a part he created over ten years ago on the "Bring on the Night" movie - but hearing it live was something else, of course.

Especially amusing was watching some concertgoers try to clap in 5/4 (for "Seven Days").

Great show. Grrrreat sound. Loud (as Jaime Godinez mentioned, 167,000 watts) but not nakakabingi na nakakaasar (as in some rock shows I've been in).

Detailed review to follow. (now get back to work, jim!)

In November 1996 a South African magazine called "Directions" had a free CD with it's issue.

On the front cover there is a close up shot from his Stingmeister, attached to the magazine is a CD in a card sleeve. The interview on the CD is the same as the USA promo CD with Branford Marsalis which was released just before Mercury Falling.

Front cover is the same as MF but states "Interview with Brandford Marsalis" and at the bottom of the front side "Exlusive to Directions The Magazine for men featuring song clips from his new album Mercury Falling"

Back cover is one of the photo's from MF, Sting with a stick and his dog.

STING - Directions Magazine interview CD South Africa A&M PROMO 60

What a kind surprise it was when Wendy and Dave announced that Tina had 150 copies of a USA promotional double album:

Strontium 90 / Regatta Mondatta - USA 2LP promo Pangea 618683002114

Its a fold open pack with both covers although the Regatta Mondatta cover is a bit different colourwise than the Japanese copy I have. Inside is the famous shot of Stewart's back at that concert, this photo is not on the CD issue, released only in America and it it said only 500 copies have been made.

So grab yours before its too late !

This just came in: (oops)... According to a report in Reuters, David Bowie just dethroned Paul McCartney as the richest rock star in England. Here's the Top 10 list of the wealthiest British rockers: David Bowie, $917 million; Paul McCartney, $868 million; Tom Jones, $459 million; Phil Collins, $367 million; Elton John, $333 million; Mick Jagger, $225 million; Eric Clapton, $200 million; George Harrison, $175 million; Sting, $161 million; and Keith Richards, $160 million...
