Nine Times Blue

Chapter 2:

"This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Day"

“Hey ‘thena, it’s me. I got the night off work tonight and I’m just callin’ to see if you were busy. Maybe we can chill at a club or somthin’? Your call. Talk to ya later”, the familiar voice on Athena’s answering machine was that belonging to her best friend since elementary school, Amber. Athena had just come home from a very ruff day at work, and almost everything that day was going wrong, so, once she heard Amber’s voice, she knew it was only about to get worse. The both of them had been roommates together their first two years of college. They had bought an apartment with Amber’s ‘then’ boyfriend David. When Amber and David spilt up after 7 long years, David moved out, and Athena and Amber did also, going to live out on their own.

Athena picked up the phone the second the message from Amber was erased. As she dialed her number, which was implanted deep inside her mind, she wondered what clubs she hadn’t been to in the past month. Her train of thought was interrupted when she heard a low voice on the other end. “Hello?” “Hey, Bambi, it’s me” Athena said as she took a seat on the stool in her kitchen. “Hey, what’s up? Doin’ anything…interesting tonight?” Amber said, with her usual mysterious voice. “What do ya have in mind now girl?!” Athena laughed with a smirk. “Oh nothing, except maybe a nice night out in the club. You up for it?” “I don’t know, last weekend when we went to the club, you kinda forgot that I was even there, and you left with that drunken Spanish dude!” She said, still remembering that night, and how stupid she felt just sittin there at the table, watchin Amber and this guy named Onyx dancin’ like they were in an R rated movie! “Hey, I said I was sorry about that! Ya know how it is, when you’ve had a few drinks, and you meet a really hot guy. You DON’T wanna let him go off with another girl and get away.” Amber said, laughing a little, remembering that night when she brought Onyx home with her. “But anyway, I promise you, I will NEVER EVER do that again! So, do ya wanna go to the club with me tonight or not?” Athena was silent for a moment, as she thought if she should give up yet another night alone, at home, watching “My Fair Lady” for the 100th time. “Yea, sure, I’ll go with you.” She couldn’t have said it fast enough after she listed her options “yes! Now I have something to do tonight! Ok, I’ll be over there in about…a half an hour. Be ready when I get there this time, please?” “Yea, I’ll be ready.” Athena said, hanging up the phone. As she got up from her chair, and toured the house, she wondered why Amber wanted to go to the club so bad. She usually just asked with this tone that made her seem so…’I don’t care’ !

As Athena walked out of her room, fully dressed and ready to go, she heard a knock at the door. When she opened the door, an all too familiar figure stood outside wearing a baby blue halter top dress that was a few inches above the knee. “Are you ready?” Amber asked, looking at Athena to see what she was wearing. “Yea, let’s get goin’ ok. Before I change my mind.” she said with an evil smirk.

As the two entered the club scene, their ears were filled with the usual loud dancing beat. Athena looked around, to see if there were any familiar faces. “Let’s get a table before all the good ones get taken” Amber screamed. As Athena took a seat, Amber quickly put her purse down and was about to go across the club. “Where are you going?” Athena asked. “I’m just going to see if someone is here, I’ll be right back.” Amber said, leaving her friend at the table alone. Just then, Athena regretted even coming. She had a feeling Amber would do the same thing to her again. Athena peered around the club, watching all of the people on the dance floor, obviously having a good time. She remembered the last time she actually ‘had’ fun at a club. It was with Joey. He was VERY into clubbing. He took her one time for her birthday, and they had a blast. It was the last time they went together though, and the last time she actually joined in on the dancing.

She looked at the bar that was all the way across the room, in the same direction Amber had gone so quickly in. She saw Amber talking to some guy, but she couldn’t make out a face, or anything. She wondered if it was Onyx, or some other guy that she might just take home with her on this night. Just then, the mysterious guy started walking towards her. As he did so, she could make out a body figure, clothing, hair, a face. Her heart stopped dead in it’s tracks. The club became completely silent, and it seemed almost like everyone else in the club were just mere blobs. All her attention was being directed straight to one person: Joey!

As he came closer and closer, tears started to form. She wanted to run. Run to the bathroom, or to her home, or anywhere but there. But she couldn’t move. Her body became stiff, and there was nothing she could do, no where she could go. She had to face the man she once thought was her everything, her reason for living, her one true love. She could feel the sweat beginning to form on her body. Her hands felt like they were swimming in their own personal pool. As he came close enough for her to smell his cologne, she wanted nothing more then to just die. But she knew she had to face him. No matter how much she dreaded it, she knew, she had to. And at that moment, she wished she had never woken up at all that day.

“This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day”~The Monkees

I guess I should have stayed in bed
my pillow wrapped around my head
instead of wakin' up to find
a nightmare of a different kind
She went away
This just doesn't seem to be my day

She didn't have to say a lot

Her pretty eyes revealed the plot
'Twas someone else she wanted more
and so I walked her to the door
What could I say?
This just doesn't seem to be my day

My, oh my

(Oh my oh my oh my)
How sad am I
(How sad am I)
How I wish she would have stayed
(wish she would have stayed)
This just doesn't seem to be my day

My whole world is upside down

She turned my smile into a frown
It's such a pity the shape I'm in
I must get on my feet again
Can't stay this way
This just doesn't seem to be my day
