Biography
On the 12th of November 1928 a baby girl was born in Philadelphia. She was the daugther of John and
Margaret Kelly and was named Grace Patricia Kelly. She was the third child out of four. She had two
sisters and a brother. Her parents were wealthy and her childhood didn’t bring any big problems. Very
young she had decided that she was gonna be an actress.
In may 1947 she graduated from Stevens School in Germantown and she was accepted into the
American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. While she was in school she worked as a model and
after graduating from the academy, she playing in TV and theater productions. Her Broadway debut
was in 1949 in the play “The Father” by A. Strindberg. But then Grace got the idea of moving to
Southern California. She wanted to do motion pictures!
Aged 22, in 1951 she had her movie debut in Fourteen Hours. She met Gary Cooper at the set.The year
after, she played in High Noon, a western with Gary Cooper again and Lloyd Bridges. Her role was the
one of Amy Kane, the wife of a sheriff, played by CooperThe movie became a hit.
Her next movie was Mogambo in 1953. She played Linda Nordley. Other cast members were Clark
Gable and Ava Gardner Grace recieved an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The movie is said to be one of the best ever produced by MGM.
Her fist coöperation with AlfredHitchcock was in “Dial “M” for murder” also starring Ray Milland
1954 was Grace’s succes year. She starred in Rear Window. She worked together with Alfred
Hitchcock again and played the part of Lisa Fremont. James Stewart played a photographer in wheel
chair who witnessed a murder.
The next film was Green Fire with Stewart Granger.
And then came The Country Girl. In which she played with Bing Crosby. She played Georgie Elgin.
er final film that year was THE BRIDGES AT TOKO-RI with Fredric March, William Holden, and
Mickey Rooney.
In 1955, Grace was once again teamed up with Alfred Hitchcock in TO CATCH A THIEF co-starring
Cary Grant. In the spring Grace Kelly arrived to the French Riviera to play Frances Stevens, After
filming (which was entirely filmed in the South of France) was over, Grace had to fly back to America
to accept her award for Best Actress at the Oscars for her part in The Country Girl.
Later Grace flew to France to attend the Cannes film festival. During the festival Grace was invited to
meet the Prince Rainier of Monaco. In the middle of 1955, Grace was preparing for the role of
Alexandra in The Swan which was released in 1956. Also In 1956, she played Tracy Lord in the musical
comedy HIGH SOCIETY. The film which starred Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby The film was well
received. It also turned out to be her final acting performance. The song True Love, a beautiful duet
with Bing Crosby, earned Platinum record. By the end of the year it was announced that Grace Kelly
was engaged to Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
Kelly had already been through Clark Gable, Ray Milland and William Holden, as well as the Shah of
Iran and the fashion designer Oleg Cassini, whom she had come close to marrying. Her taste horrified
her father, Jack, an Irish-American bricklayer turned millionaire builder. Her younger brother once
complained, "I don't generally approve of these oddballs. I wish she would go out with the more athletic
type."
But by the time they met, it may have required nothing less than a prince to equal Kelly's celebrity. "I
don't want to be married to someone who feels belittled by my success," she once said. "I couldn't bear
walking into a restaurant and hearing the maître d' refer to my husband as Mr. Kelly." From his side of
the Atlantic, Rainier saw in Kelly a woman who might bring not only heirs, but a touch of glamor to
revive his entire domain.
