Madison Rebecca Taylor, an orphan, was the daughter of a
Vermont senator and a Southern belle. Her mother taught her to be a proper lady until her death during the war. Maddie's father then took over her
upbringing, molding her into the son he never had. He never remarried, and died of pneumonia in November 1875, leaving Madison alone with no
place to go. Maddie acts as her mother would have wanted her to in society, but she also carries on her father's wish for her to be a strong,
independent woman who could match a man at anything. Her secret passions are horse racing and gambling. She stands a mere 5'2" tall, and usually
wears her golden blond hair down. She has her mother's amber eyes and fashion sense, wearing mostly dark, dramatically colored dresses, which she
fills out quite nicely. She arrived in Liberty Creek almost a year after Tess did, relieving Mrs.
Carrol in the teaching of the school. Her father left her a good supply of ready cash, but her secret vice caused her to lose half of it to Robert Marshall. Still a minor when her father died, she headed west before it could be decided what to do with
her. Shortly after her arrival in Liberty Creek, she recieved word from Emily, her childhood friend in Vermont,
that her ex-fiancé, Jonathan, had tracked her down with the help of some of the finest New York detectives. He finally caught up to her and tried to
attack her, but was prevented from doing so by Jack. Madison agreed to testify against Jonathan in court, but he
walked away a free man, returning back home to the East. After the trial, she found a strange note from an unidentified source in her hotel room. She
and Sally conducted a séance, during which she was able to see a vision from her past. Upon her return to Liberty Creek,
she was reunited with her brother Cole, who she had not seen or heard from for fifteen years. After finding her
cabin vandalized, she accepted the invitation to stay at Belleterre. When Robert returned for the summer,
Madison demanded a rematch of their card game. She won, but only because he threw the game. Emily surprised her by showing up at Belleterre
shortly after the end of the schoolyear. She has mended fences with Jack and attended the centennial ball with
him. It was discovered that night that she had appendicitis, and Jack and Gabe operated. She came out all right, but not before being left alone, in a
fevered state, with Robert. Thinking she would die, she unwittingly professed her love to him. She and Robert ended up spending one drunken night
together, but it went no futher. Around this time Jonathan was found murdered. Madison was suspected for a
while, but Robert supplied a (perfectly innocent) alibi. It was actually Cole who killed him. Jack later asked Madison to marry him and she
consented, but later broke it off (just before it was to be announced to all their friends) to chase after Robert. In Boston, Robert blew her off and she
returned to her home in Vermont, where her friend Emily was staying. She attempted suicide but survived, later finding that she was at least three
months pregnant. Unfortunately, the doctor later told her the baby had died. She and Robert reconciled for a brief time, but she still left him to visit
her aunt in Paris.
