SUGGESTED READINGS 7. SOURCES INTRODUCTION After spending some time recording material for DOWN IN THE GROOVE in the spring, Dylan reappeared together with The Grateful Dead for six summer shows in July. However the almost boyish image from last summer is now dramatically changed to the extreme opposite. Dylan is suddenly an old man, bearded, with an aching back, nearsighted, silent between songs and silent between shows. During the summer tour with The Grateful Dead and the Temples In Flames Tour in Europe in the fall he says not one single word in 36 concerts and he gives no interviews at all. MINI TOUR WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD 3.1 Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sometime in the spring Dylan and The Grateful Dead apparently decided on a series of concerts during The Dead's summer tour. Rehearsals took place at Club Front in San Rafael, California and the known songs are indicated below in the song chart. This collaboration with The Grateful Dead obviously influenced Dylan in (at least) three different ways: (1) The Dead encouraged him to search out his '60's and '70's catalog of songs. A number of live debuts was the result. (2) From this tour onwards Dylan has played virtually random sets, obviously deciding the set list right before the show and often changing it on stage. (3) No more rapping on stage. Only recently has he started acknowledging the audience again, sometimes he even comments on the songs. 3.2 The Musicians ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Backed by The Grateful Dead. 3.3 The Show ~~~~~~~~~~~~ A concert opened with approximately two hours with The Grateful Dead. Then 12 or 13 songs with Bob Dylan and the Dead. TEMPLES IN FLAMES 4.1 Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The tour in Europe in the fall with Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker was very, very different from their previous tour in the US, True Confessions. Dylan again was the elderly bard. Stage lights were so turned down you could hardly see him. His singing was at times extremely erratic, both in terms of phrasing and lyrics. The sets were apparently completely random, as can be seen from the song charts below. The Dylan part of the show was also very short. All this: short set, dark stage and Dylan not saying a word, compared of course very unfavorably to the previous shows in Europe in the summer of '84 and a lot of people went home utterly disappointed. It must be said though that The Heartbreakers provided excellent backing throughout the tour and that some of the shows were really very good. 4.2 The musicians ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (guitar, vocal), Mike Campbell (guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Howie Epstein (bass), Stan Lynch (drums), and The Queens Of Rhythm: Queen Esther Marrow, Madelyn Quebec, Carolyn Dennis. 4.3 The Show ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The tour was done in collaboration with Roger McGuinn who opened each concert with a solo set consisting of 5 or 6 songs. He was then joined by Tom Petty & The Heartbeakers for the final 3-4 songs. After Roger McGuinn's set, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers performed their set of 7-8. After an intermission, the lights went down the sound got worse and Bob Dylan came on for his set which consisted about 14 songs. Starting with the show in Gothenburg, September 25, Dylan performed one, later two "semi-acoustic" songs, backed by Benmont Tench on piano and Mike Campbell on guitar. 4.4 Overview ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Number of shows: 30 Number of circulating shows: 30 100% Number of complete shows: 30 100% Number of unique shows: 30 100% [1] Number of different shows: 30 100% [2] Number of different songs: 56 Total number of performances: 438 [1] a unique show is a show where both the songs played and the order in which they were played is unique [2] a show is different from another show is the set of songs differ, regardless of order. # of songs # of shows 13 *** 14 ******************* 15 *** 16 ** 17 ** 18 19 20 * 4.5 The dates ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sept 5 Hayarkon Park, Tel-Aviv, Israel 7 Sultan's Pool, Jerusalem, Israel 10 St, Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland 12 Area Ex Autodromo, Modena, Italy 13 Palasport.
