INTRODUCTION
Another year of extreme activity. A new tour in two parts, a new
record, and on top of it, starring in a film. For the return to the concert
scene, Dylan choose to appear as the rejuvenated legend, rather punkish,
in sleeveless shirts and leather vests, lot of amulets and one eardrop.
The tour was a result of his collaboration with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
at the Farm Aid benefit in September 1985. It was a tour that featured many
of the new songs from EMPIRE BURLESQUE as well as songs from his entire career
and then also a lot of rock 'n' roll covers. True Confessions?
1. CALENDAR
January Dylan is interviewed by Don McLeese for 'Chicago Sun-Times'.
January Telephone interview by Toby Croswell for the Australian
'Rolling Stone'.
January Rehearsals continue at Soundstage 41, Universal Studios.
According to Tom Petty some sixty songs are rehearsed, among
then 'All My Tomorrows' and 'This Was My Love'.
January 20 Dylan performs with Stevie Wonder at the Martin Luther King Day
concert at the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center in
Washington, DC.
January 25 Albert Grossman dies of a heart attack on a flight to London.
January 27 Bob Dylan gives a congratulation speech to Willie Nelson,
when he receives the First Annual Award of Appreciation.
Broadcast by ABC-TV Network.
Late January George Neegus interviews Dylan in Malibu for the Australian
TV-program 'Sixty Minutes'. Broadcast February 10.
February 5 The new tour named "True Confessions" with Tom Petty & The
Heartbreakers starts in Auckland, New Zealand.
February 8 Interview by Stuart Coupe for 'The Age'.
February 9 A new Dylan song, 'Band Of The Hand', written for a film
with that name is recorded by Dylan and Petty at Festival
Studios in Sydney, Australia. An alternate title is
'It's Hell Time, Man!'
February 10 Dylan gives a press conference at Brett Whitley's Studio
in Sydney.
February 19 Dylan appears at a Dire Strait concert in Melbourne and
sings four songs with the band.
February 22 Dylan is interviewed by Maurice Parker in a hotel room in
Melbourne. The interview is broadcast by Channel 7, Brisbane,
February 24 in the program "State Affair".
February 24,25 The two shows in Sydney are recorded and released in parts in
Westwood One's Superstar Concert Series. The shows are also
filmed and 10 songs are released on the HARD TO HANDLE video.
March 4 Richard Manuel hangs himself in a motel room in Florida.
March 10 Last show of the first leg in the Far East is played at the
Budokan Hall in Tokyo.
March 31 Dylan receives yet another award, this time the American
Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Founder's Award.
Press conference and Thank You Speech at Chasen's Restaurant
in Los Angeles are broadcast by CNN in "Showbiz Today".
Dylan is also interviewed briefly by Dick Shoemaker, and this
broadcast by ABC in "Entertainment Tonight".
April Release of the 'Band Of The Hand' single with non Dylan B-side.
May Recording sessions for KNOCKED OUT LOADED.
May Release of the 'Band Of The Hand' soundtrack.
May 15 Lorimar Production announces that Dylan is to star in a film
called 'Hearts Of Fire'. Dylan is to write six new songs for
the film.
May 21 Another telephone radio program with Bob Fass broadcasted by
WBAI-FM Radio in New York as a Bob Dylan birthday program.
Bob Fass sounds exactly as in 1966. Bob Dylan doesn't.
June Recording of 'Thanks God', which is broadcast in a
syndicated anti-drug program organized by Chabad, Sept 14.
June 6 Amnesty International Benefit Concert at The Forum in
Los Angeles.
June 9 The American leg of the True Confessions tour begins with
a show in The Sports Arena in San Diego.
June 13 Dylan is interviewed by Jon Brem for the 'Minneapolis Star
and Tribune'.
June 20 Release of the HARD TO HANDLE video.
July 2 The show at the Rubber Bowl in Akron, Ohio is played in
collaboration with Grateful Dead, Dylan joining the Dead in
their set for three songs.
July 4 Three songs from the show at Rich Stadium in Buffalo are
broadcasted live via satellite for Farm Aid 2 and simulcast
on various radio stations.
July 7 Another Grateful Dead collaboration, this time at the
RFK Stadium in Washington. Again Dylan joins the Dead on
three songs.
July 17 Dylan is interviewed backstage at Madison Square Gardens in
New York by Mark Ellen for 'Q' magazine.
August 6 Last concert at the Mid-State Fairground in Paso Robles
features the only live rendition of Brownsville Girl.
However, only the chorus is sung and Dylan comments after
the song that they did it for TV. It is broadcast by ABC-TV
in Entertainment Tonight the next day.
August 8 KNOCKED OUT LOADED is released. The "release an album, do a
tour to promote it" routine in reverse.
August 17 Hearts Of Fire press conference in the national Film Theatre
in London.
August 27 Recording of the 'Hearts Of Fire' songs in Townshouse Studio
in London.
September 20 Dylan is interviewed by Christopher Sykes in the Colston Hall,
Bristol, England, during the filming of 'Hearts of Fire'.
September 30 Dylan is again interviewed by Christopher Sykes in London,
during the filming of 'Hearts of Fire'.
September Dylan is interviewed by Donald Chase from 'San Francisco
Chronicle'.
October 17 The third Christopher Sykes interview, this time in Toronto,
Canada, during the filming of 'Hearts of Fire'.
October 18 The fourth and final interview by Christopher Sykes takes place
in Dylan's coach in Toronto, Canada. It is broadcast by BBC 1
in England in the documentary "Getting To Dylan". A part of the
first interview is also broadcast as well as a part of the
London press conference.
November 1 Dylan performs with the Paul James Band at the Nag's Head in
Markham, north of Toronto.
November 10 Dylan presents the Canadian Hall Of Fame award to
Gordon Lightfoot in Toronto.

This tour consisted of two parts, the first in New Zealand, Australia and
Japan, referred to as "The Far East Leg" below. The second part took place
in the US, Dylan's first tour in his home country for five years.

the show concluded with 5 or 6 songs by Bob Dylan and the band. Encores
consisted normally of 3 songs, the first being another Dylan/Petty duet.

An usual big number of covers were played during this tour, many of them
so obscure that they are to this day not identified. On this first leg we
got: Baby, Got To Go, Riding On The Train, Shake and
We Three (My Echo, My Shadow And Me).
Two one offs from EMPIRE BURLESQUE: Dark Eyes and Never Gonna Be The Same
Again. dark Eyes is really just a fragment since Dylan does not seem
to remember neither lyrics nor melody.
The following songs were heard only once in 1986: Heart Of Mine,
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, License To Kill and Don't Think Twice,
It's All Right was played solo only once during this leg and twice in the US.

June 30.
Ron Wood played guitar on some songs on all three shows in Madison Square
Gardens in New York:
July 15 and 16 on songs 16-20 and the encores, 22-24.
July 17 on songs 15-19 and the encores 21-23.
In East Rutherford, July 21, Al Kooper played organ from Like A Rolling Stone
onwards.
The show at The Forum in Inglewood saw three guests:
- Dave Stewart who played guitar on When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky
and then again on Seeing The Real You At Last and the rest of the songs,
- Al Kooper again on keyboards from Like A Rolling Stone and onwards and
- Annie Lennox who duetted with Dylan on Knockin' On Heaven's Door.
The next day at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Al Kooper played
