General MIDI Sound Set
Search Engine
This search engine allows you to determine what instrument is assigned to a sound set number or to determine what number to use for a specific instrument. Start with the noun name of the instrument, not the adjectives describing it. All database entries start with the base instrument name (such as "piano", "bass", "guitar" and "drum") followed by the adjectives describing it (such as "piano acoustic grand"). This allows you to find all the sound sets for that type of instrument by typing in the base name and using the "find next" button until the end of the database is reached. You also do not have to type in the whole name of an instrument to find it as long as you have the first letters right (for example "glock" would find "glockenspiel"). However, do not use capital letters in your entry (you will not get any results as the search is case sensitive and the database has no capitals to make it get consistent responses). You must have a javascript capable browser to successfully use this search engine. It has been tested to work with the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape.
Since the numbers overlap between the sound set and percussion maps, they have been split out
into separate search engines.
To go to the percussion map search engine click here.
Type in instrument number or name in box below and select the appropriate type entry from the drop down box. Then click on the "find next" button to determine the matching number or instrument.
