Mac Emulation on UAE!

That's right folks, UAE can be used to run ShapeShifter and Fusion, the world's best and most accurate Mac emulators!

This is the official place for information on UAE and Mac emulation. The first and the best!

Use this information at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage that may come from instructions here.

ShapeShifter:

Obtaining the necessary files:

I am not going to include instructions on hot to use LHA or LZX, you should know this by now.

First of all, you need a working copy of WinUAE.

The earliest version that supports Picassso96 is WinUAE 0.6.9 Release 12 P96 Beta.
I really hope you already have this working. Its important.

I  do not recommend this project to someone who is new to UAE, it is fairly complicated and will take some time to complete.

You need a copy of ShapeShifter.
The official homepage of ShapeShifter: http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/SSMain.html

You are going to need a MacOS bootfile. This is a harddisk file that has MacOS already installed onto it, that you must tell ShapeShifter to boot from. They are a nicely sized d/l, but if you look around the web, I think you can find a system 7.0.1 bootfile that is only 1.5megs.
Try this link: http://www.virtual-pc.com/henners/macintosh/bin/SSBootFile.lha

The hardest to find is the Mac ROM image. I can't give this to you, nor can you get it from someone without doing something illegal. You must own a Macintosh to use the ROMs.

**D.O.N.T...E.M.A.I.L...M.E...F.O.R...R.O.M.S***

There is a program included in the ShapeShifter package that will copy the ROMs off of a real Mac.

Setup the necessary files:

Starting with Beta 6 of the Picasso editions, Brian King has fixed the problem with bootfiles on virtual volumes. I now recommend that you NEVER use UAE hardfiles and ONLY USE VIRTUAL VOLUMES. They are faster, more convenient and just cool.

Max out UAE with all the ram you can give it. ShapeShifter wants it.

Unlha the ShapeShifter archive to your virtual volume. It should create its own directory called ShapeShifter.

Included in the ShapeShifter archive is a program called PrepareEmul. What this program does is tell your Amiga not to start the chipram until $2000, thereby leaving the bottom 8k completely free, so it can be used by the emulator. PrepareEmul does not crash UAE.

Copy PrepareEmul to your 'sys:c' directory, and modify the file called StartupSequence in 'sys:S'. 'C:PrepareEmul 1200' should be added by you to the first line of the file.

UAE should still boot with no problems. Test it out and make sure everything is ok!

The next step is to copy your Mac ROM into the ShapeShifter directory. The file should be called 'ShapeShifter ROM'.

Now, it is possible to start ShapeShifter. Its not going to boot yet because we didn't copy a bootfile with MacOS, but it will load up and show a picture of a disk with a blinking question mark. This is the Mac's ROM telling us that it wants an OS.

Now, just unLHA the bootfile and copy it into your ShapeShifter directory.
It doesn't matter what the file is called.

Startup ShapeShifter and select the Volumes/Disks setup.
Goto Filedisk 1 and type in the name of your bootfile.

Exit out and select Graphics, Select the Picasso96 ScreenMode [uaegfx:]
Let me give you a hint in equation form:

Lower(Colors,ScreenModes)=Faster ShapeShifter
But any Picasso96 mode is faster than ECS.

Finally, go to the Memory settings and put Mac Memory (KB) to 4000.

Hit save, and if you dare, Start.

Cool stuff to notice:

If you turn on serial emulation in UAE, you can use the modem through ShapeShifter! Its amazing!

Sound emulation works through both layers too.

Unfortunately MacOS 8 doesn't work in ShapeShifter yet...

Fusion:

I have not successfully run this emulator yet. I know it can work though. I'll get back to ya!
