Prologue

I came racing in from school and threw my bag down on the counter. ‘I’m home!’ ‘In the lounge Peta!’ I heard my mom yell. ‘Come in here, we have something very important to discuss!’ Dad yelled too. ‘Great!’ I mumbled. ‘Another ‘You don’t do enoungh around here!’ lecture!’ I grabbed a can of cola from the fridge and flopped down on the sofa. ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ I asked, flicking the TV on. ‘Turn that off!’ dad roared. ‘Jeez!’ I turned it off and turned my attention to him. ‘What?’ ‘Where’s your brother?’ ‘Ben!’ I screamed, ‘Mom and Dad need to talk to you!’ ‘I could have done that!’ Dad grumbled, glaring at me. Ben came in and Dad looked at us both. ‘My job, well…I’ve been transferred.’ Dad always went straight to the point. I sat up. ‘WHAT?!’ I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard. ‘Don’t you yell at me!’ Dad warned. ‘He’s been transferred to Tulsa Oklahoma.’ Mom said. ‘The same branch as Troy’s dad Jeff. We leave in two weeks.’ I couldn’t believe it! I did NOT want to go anywhere! I started yelling and screaming and got grounded until we left Anaheim. Nothing I could say would change anything. I was leaving my beloved LA.

Part I - Please give me another go.

Chapter 1.-Tulsa.

The only things I knew about Tulsa were the oil, the fields (which meant cows), wheat silos and the country. Being from a city as big as Los Angeles, moving to cows and wheat silos was not my idea of fun. ‘Troy moved there and he enjoys it.’ Mom told me. ‘Yeah, but he’s not me!’ I was stubborn. I did not want to move, my friends and whole life was here, in Anaheim. And besides, no one in Tulsa had Disneyland practically in his or her yard! But we moved anyway. The first week there was hectic; we had to unpack, set up our new house and enroll my brother and I in Junior High. Our new house was on Hendrix Ave, West Tulsa, about 5 miles west (dur!) of the city center. I was to go to Balmoral Junior High. The neighborhood seemed nice and the city was close, so I’d never get bored. (Mom assured me!) My first day at school was ok. I met some nice people, and got a surprise, I found out Troy was going to the same school! He introduced me to his friends, the girls, so they could make me feel welcome, Amy, Louise and Sarah. They were really friendly and now I don’t know what I’d do without them. He also told about his other friends, Simon and Mark and his best friend Taylor, who were taught at home and how Taylor played with two of his brothers in a band. The first Saturday night Troy invited me to one of Taylor’s concerts. Taylor was on the keyboard and his two brothers, Isaac and Zac were on guitar and drums respectively. It was great and I was blown away by their talent, it was hard to imagine they were just the same age as me! I also fell in love with Taylor. He was blonde haired, blue eyed and absolutely hot! Troy said he knew I would like him. Afterwards we went skating at the local rink. (Well they all went skating and I tried to!) Taylor’s group, (The Hanson Brothers) came too.

Chapter 2.-Taylor.

I never really got introduced to Taylor, Troy promised he would but he never got around to it. I did meet Isaac though, he was 15 at the time and really nice. Zac was only 10 and had to go home straight after the gig, so I didn’t get to meet him. As we were skating around, I was trying to look really good at it to impress Taylor, but I was not succeeding. I kept falling over. One time around I was going well and I saw Taylor speeding up behind me. I tried to start going faster, but I fell over. Right onto him. (As you do!) He helped me up and introduced himself. ‘Are you alright?’ He smiled. He was even hotter up close. He had these adorable baby blue eyes and a dimple in his right cheek when he smiled.

*Taylor*

Troy said she was hot, I never thought he meant this hot though! Wow!

‘Fine thanks.’ I was glad it was dark so he couldn’t see me blush. ‘I’m Taylor Hanson. You must be Troy’s friend Peta, right?’I almost fainted. How did he know my name? ‘Yep. How did you know?’ He blushed and smiled shyly. He was sooooo cute! ‘I saw you before and asked around. You’re from Anaheim, right? Did you know Troy when he lived there?’ We were standing in the path of all the skaters so he led me over to sit down. ‘Yep. We were pretty close. I didn’t expect to see him here though.’ ‘Did you know he’d moved here?’ ‘I knew he’d moved to Tulsa somewhere, but we lost contact and I didn’t know exactly where. It was great to see him again. It was good to know someone.’ ‘Well, I’m one of his friends here and I’m sure you’ll fit right in.’ He was really sweet and I fell more in love with him. I told him how much I enjoyed the concert and he invited me to a gig he was doing at an U/18’s club next weekend. We talked for awhile and I kept noticing Troy looking over at us. He smiled and mouthed ‘I knew it!’ Taylor and I had a lot in common, we both liked to read, write and play sports. He was really into song writing, playing the piano, keyboard and singing. He told me he had been singing with Isaac for about two years; Zac had only just joined. He was also right into blading.

Chapter 3.-Love and Brothers.

I told him I couldn’t blade and he blushed. (How cute!) ‘I know, I’ve been watching you.’ It was my turn to blush. ‘How about I teach you?’ he asked. I couldn’t refuse. He held onto my hand for about three laps of the rink, to keep me up. I was in heaven. The rest of the night was a blur, but I remember Taylor kept looking over at me and talking to me.

*Taylor*

She is so nice, I wonder if she likes me? I’ll have to ask Troy. I wonder if she’ll come to the concert?

Troy told me he really liked me and wanted to see me more. He told me that all the next week Taylor kept ringing him up and asking him if he thought I liked him and if I’d go to the concert he asked me to and all these other questions about me. I didn’t quite believe Troy, but I did the same thing to him about Taylor. Troy said he felt like a dating agency and told me he’d said to Taylor why didn‘t he just ring me ‘cause I’d say yes to whatever he asked me and to stop going through him because he was going to go crazy! All the next week I floated around and everyone said Taylor did the same thing. I never saw him though, because he was taught at home. I couldn’t wait to see him again and find out if it was all true. Amy, Louise and Sarah told me he was as in love with me as I was with him numerous times but I was still unsure. The Tuesday before I was to see Taylor again, I saw Isaac down at the mall. He saw me and waved. I didn’t know he was waving at me so I kept walking. He called out to me. ‘Peta! Wait up!’ I waited for him. ‘Hi! Remember me? I’m Isaac, the brother of the guy who won’t stop talking about you.’ He laughed. I blushed. He was with two other guys, a tall good-looking teenager and a small, but very LOUD boy of about ten.

Chapter 4.-The call that didn’t come.

He introduced them as Mark, the older one, his friend, and Zac, his hyperactive brother. I recognized Zac as the drummer from Isaac and Taylor’s group. ‘Soooooo, this is the one and only, Miss Perfect, Taylor’s dream girl, can’t stop thinking about her, Peta? Is it?’ Zac pretended to swoon. I blushed furiously. ‘Zac, don’t embarrass her! Or me for that matter!’ Isaac swatted him with his hand. Zac fell dramatically to the floor and started to scream and thrash about. I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Isaac and Mark joined in. ‘He’s always like this!’ Isaac told me. We were getting dirty looks so Isaac picked Zac up, slung him over his shoulder and carried him outside. We went to the nearby park and Isaac told me how Taylor had not stopped talking about me all week since he met me. ‘He keeps on and on about how nice and pretty and smart and funny you are. He keeps asking me if you’d go somewhere with him and all this stuff.’ Isaac was trying to embarrass Taylor even without him being here. I was not sure how to respond, but luckily (or unluckily) Zac broke in with his bit. ‘She is so pretty and I love her so and want to kiss her and hug her! Smooch! Smooch! Smooch!’ Isaac hit him again and he ran off around the park at a hundred miles an hour. ‘Don’t mind Zac, he’s nickname’s Animal and that’s exactly what he is. He’s going through that crazy stage! He just wants to embarrass Tay.’ ‘Ok’ I replied laughing. This was one nice, (but crazy!) set of brothers. Isaac told me more about Taylor, (he gets called Tay) and the rest of his family. As he was going, he told me he’d get Taylor to call me. I waited for days for his call but it didn’t come. I was devastated. It was all a lie! They were all setting me up! I felt like such a fool. The new kid, of course! I was easy to put up for a good joke. They didn’t like me so they made a joke out of me! They were probably all laughing together right now. Taylor, Troy, Isaac, Zac, Louise, Amy, Sarah and the rest of them. I was humiliated. I pretended I was sick for three days so I wouldn’t have to go to school to face the ridicule of the people I thought were friends. I didn’t go to the concert. I just couldn’t face him. I was convinced I’d been set up. After the third day I realized Mom knew I wasn’t sick, so I confessed to her the whole sad truth. She was pretty sympathetic and told me not to worry. Just then the phone rang. ‘I’ll be right back.’ She told me. I could hear her answer the phone.

Chapter 5.- Known too well.

‘Yes?….Oh hello Troy!….She’s a bit better, thank you….She’s just had a cold that’s all….You want to speak to her?….I’ll just see if she’s up to it. Peta! Troy’s on the phone for you!’ ‘I don’t want to speak to him!’ I yelled. ‘Peta! He only wants to see how you are!’ ‘I don’t care! I never want to hear from him again!’ I heard her tell Troy this and hang up. She walked back to my room. ‘I think you were a bit harsh. When I asked Troy if any of his friends had upset you he had no idea what I was on about. Are you sure you got your facts straight?’ I yelled at her for taking someone else’s side over mine and told her to leave me alone. Then I started to cry. She left me alone for awhile after that. About five o’clock that night Troy came over. I told him I didn’t want to see him or any of his friends, especially Taylor, ever again. He was surprised and asked why. He thought I was madly in love with Taylor. I told him he should know and he flatly denied he knew what I was talking about. I told him his joke was heartless and I thought we were friends and blah blah. He again denied this and told me I was a fool for thinking he’d do anything like that to me. He told me Taylor really did like me and was just to shy to call me cause he ’d never had a girlfriend before. I scoffed at him. A guy like Taylor had never had a girlfriend? Yeah right! ‘But I s’pose if he humiliates other girls like this then he doesn’t deserve one.’ ‘Peta, grow up! Why would Taylor, the nicest guy I know, and I, one of your oldest, closest friends, do this to you?’ ‘I don’t know, Troy. I don’t know Taylor, he could be an axe murderer or anything.’ I told him sarcastically. I didn’t want to believe Troy. He tried to convince me for a few more minutes, and knowing the old Troy too well, I started to believe him. I went to school the next day and all Troy’s friends were extra nice to me.

Chapter 6.- Meet me at the Civic Center.

They keep telling me they would never do anything like that to me and that Taylor was too sweet a guy to hurt a girl’s feelings. They told he really did like me but was just shy. The next day I got a letter with no postage stamp (it had been hand delivered) in the mailbox. I didn’t have a clue who it was from so I opened it while I was alone. It was from Taylor.
Dear Peta,
I didn’t mean for this to happen. I am really sorry. I really like you and I’m sorry I didn’t call you, I was too scared you wouldn’t want to speak to me. Ike (Isaac) and Troy kept telling me to call you, but I just couldn’t. They kept saying how much you liked me but I didn’t believe them. I though t you were way out of my league. I wrote this letter to tell you how I feel because I’m not very good with this type of thing. Please don’t think I’m a fake or anything, I’m not, I promise. I never meant to hurt you. I really want to get to know you. This letter is really from me and to prove it, meet me at the Civic Center at 5pm. I promise I’ll be there. Please give me another go,
Taylor.
I was in tears when I’d finished reading the letter. It sounded so sincere. I looked at my watch. It was four-thirty. I had to get to the Civic Center! I quickly got changed and told mom that I was going to the library. I tucked the letter in my pocket and rode as fast as I could to the Civic Center. Would he be there? I wondered. Troy couldn’t possibly be this mean as to set me up again, could he? When I got to the Center, I locked my bike up to the rack. I stopped and reread the letter. I looked around. And I saw him. Sitting on a waist high wall swinging his legs back and forth. He looked up and saw me.

*Taylor*

She came. I just hope she can forgive me for being such a jerk.

I froze. Was he here to laugh at me for being sucked in yet again? No, he was walking toward me and he was not laughing, or even smiling. He had a sad look on his face. He was really serious. He really did care for me, even though he hardly knew me. He got up close and stopped.

Chapter 7.- Love at second sight.

‘I didn’t think you’d come.’ He said. ‘I thought I’d blown it.’ He looked down at his shoes and scuffed his feet. I started to cry. ‘Hey, don’t cry,’ he moved closer to me and put his arm around me. ‘I am so stupid!’ I spluttered. ‘I thought you liked me and then I thought you hated me and now I don’t know what to do! I don’t always get like this, by the way. I just have never, I mean, I really like you and I don’t want this to be…’ he put his finger to my lips and shushed me. ‘I meant every word of that letter. I’m sorry, I’m not good at this so just read the letter and think I said it. I really like you and don’t want it to be over before it has begun. I’d really like to get to know you.’ I stopped crying and looked up at him. I noticed a tear glistening in his eye. He saw me look at it, wiped it away and blushed. ‘I’d like to get to know you too.’ I said. He put his hands around my face and put his lips on mine. It was mind-blowing. The kiss was only a small one, but to me it seemed to last forever. For beginners, we were pretty good at this kissing stuff! It was weird, though. It was only the second time we had ever seen each other but we were already kissing. He must have sensed this and said, ‘I know that was weird, but I’ve never done this thing before and I had to make sure you believed me and that was the only way I could think of. I hope you don’t think I’m dumb.’ He blushed. ‘No way, but you sure convinced me you’re not lying!’ He laughed.

*Taylor*

I’ve never met anyone like her before. I wish this moment could last forever.
