THE MORAB!
The Morab Horse is a breed that blends the pure bred Morgan with the pure bred Arabian breeds. The word MORAB was coined by William Randolph Hearst, a major political and newspaper power in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He was the first breeder of Morabs that we know of and used these highly versatile Morabs on his San Simeon Ranch, an 80,000 acre ranch on the central coast of California.
.....Morabs are friendly, very intelligent and able to be great family horses as well as talented show horses. Morabs exceed in the endurance field of competition, winning many titles in the US. Besides being greatly suited for endurance riding, the Morab excells at Driving, Western, Saddleseat, Huntseat, Dressage, and Trail.
The Morab inherents the Morgan's wonderful bone and sensibility combining the Arabian's refinement and tail flagging flash. How could you go wrong with combining what is considered by some two of the most beautiful and talented horse breeds in the world. A Morab can be registered with the Morab Registry if it is only of Arabian and Morgan breeding, can prove it's Arabian and Morgan parentage and is between 25% 75% of both breeds.
Many Morabs are also registered as Half Arabians and with the hopeful formation of the Half Morgan registry, some Morabs may be triple registered. A Morab can be almost any color. Palomino, Buckskin, and Dun are becoming very popular. The traditional colors of the breed are Bay, Chestnut, Black, and Grey. This gives the Morab owner a rainbow of possibilities in choosing a Morab that suits his or her color preferences.
Today's versitile Morab is becoming more and more popular. Presently the kings of the open show world in the Midwest. These horses can be seen participating in all disciplines. The Morgan breed is America at it's best, created to serve the diverse needs of American farmers.
Family horse, farm work, harness, and riding, these horses did it all. With so many Arabian crosses in the world today, the only natural choice seems to be the cross onto Morgans.
The Morab has been seen more and more today in the class A Half Arabian curcuit. While most of these Morabs are registered as Half Arabians and not Morabs, many are now seeing the benifits of double registration. More avenues exist today to show Morabs in their own classes. Regional and National level shows are now a reality. This brings more value to Morab to Morab breeding and an opportunity to achieve the goals set by breeders, to breed second, third, forth , and fifth generation Morabs.
Future generations will probably see the result of todays careful breeding. There may come a day when the books close to outside Morgan and Arabian breeding and the Morab will stand alone as an independent breed. For now, however, the breed needs to grow and take advantage of the wonderful bloodlines that exist today from it's parent breeds. The Morab breed is indebted to the dedicated Morgan and Arabian breeders, who's vision transcends their own breed and is helping to create a new one.
