Two Things

If there were but two things,
Which I might eternal keep,
Forever with my soul,
Though my body sleep,
I could name them without thought,
Though these things be dearly bought.

There are two things,
Things best loved of my heart,
I hold them ever dear,
In day's light and night's dark.
Though stomach starve and body writhe,
These things ever keep my soul alive.

My Creator comes first,
Maker of all which lives and is.
He, The Captain of my soul,
His Son, my Saviour from my own sins.
Without Him, my existence could not be,
He gave His only Son, just to save me.

Next, beloved over all mortal things,
Comes the object of love's desire.
For I love you more than all man-kind,
You make the blood of my heart burn unquenchable fire.
And with you there to keep me company,
My spirit will never wish to flee.

If I but had Him and thou forevermore,
I know, truly, my heart would ever soar.
