Not really thinking about what he was doing, Cal pursued them. Running down the stairs at breakneck speed, he didn't see the remains of the cherub on the floor until it was too late, and he went sliding, losing his grip on the gun as he did so. Scrambling to get up, he grabbed the gun as he ran, shoving someone who was trying to get up the stairs out of the way. He continued firing as he ran, taking pleasure out of Rose's terrified scream. When he got to the bottom of the Grand Staircase, he saw that the dining saloon was already flooded!! He paused briefly and looked up. When he saw them trying to run through the water, the fury renewed and he again took off in pursuit. He jumped into the water, which was up around his waist, gasping with the cold. He fired off the last remaining shots, grunting in frustration when he realized he was out of bullets! "I hope you enjoy your time together!"
Hearing the ship's creaking worsening, he headed back up the stairs. The necklace!! He groaned loudly, then began to laugh bitterly. "What could possibly be funny?", Lovejoy asked from the top of the stairs.
Turning to look up at him, Cal grimaced. "I put the diamond in the coat." Seeing that Lovejoy was not following his line of thinking, he added, "I put the coat on her!" Understanding flashed across Lovejoy's face, and he shook his head.
Looking back behind him at the rapidly flooding dining room, Cal lowered his head in resignation. "I'm sure they're dead anyway. We'd better go see if Murdoch has saved room on any boats for us." They headed back up the stairs.
