Once he got through to the other side, Cal followed Lovejoy to where he had seen them earlier. The crowd around the lifeboat was so thick that it took a second for him to locate Rose. Sure enough, Jack was right there beside her. They looked like they were arguing about something. When he got within earshot, he heard Rose say "I'm not going without you." He could see the effort Jack was making to look stern as he repeated his request for her to get in the boat. Pausing to look at them, he made his decision.

"Yes. Get in the boat, Rose." Startled, both of them looked over at him. Rose with fear, and Jack with dismay turning into anger. Cal's lips tightened when he saw the way that Rose instinctively moved closer to Jack. They tightened even further what Jack put his arm around her shoulders in an effort to comfort her. Only then did Cal really look at Rose. Her dress was wet, and the only coverage she had was a blanket that had been thrown over her shoulders. "My God, look at you. Put this on." Removing the blanket, he thrust it roughly at Jack, then took off his overcoat and put it around Rose's shoulders. She looked over at Jack, frightened, as she put her arms into the coat. After he had the coat settled around her shoulders, he ran his hands over her hair, trying to comfort her himself. To his surprise, Jack rushed forward possessively and pushed Rose out of his grasp. While Officer Lightholler continued his call for more women to come into the boat, Rose and Jack continued to talk as if Cal had never even shown up!

Seeing the emotions that were passing between the two, Cal again felt the anger rising. Smiling grimly he stepped forward. "I have an arrangement on the other side of the ship." Realizing that this may be the only way to get Rose into the boat, he added, "Jack and I can get off safely, both of us." Jack looked over at him, giving him a look that said he clearly did not believe that.

He had obviously caught on to what Cal was attempting to do. And for the first time Cal was willing to work with him to achieve a common goal. Jack turned back to Rose. "See? Got my own boat to catch."

Cal tried to smile at Rose, but found it nearly impossible to do so under the circumstances. "Get on, almost full." Lightholler reached out and grabbed her arm, literally dragging her along toward the boat. Cal watched as Jack accompanied her as far as he could. When he could go no further, he reached out and held her hand until they were forced apart. Cal wanted to feel some sort of satisfaction at seeing this. But, oddly enough, he actually felt a pang of guilt. The order was given to begin lowering the boat. Cal looked down at Rose as the boat was being lowered. She was looking up, but it wasn't at him. The anger returned. He looked over at Jack. "You're a good Liar."

"Almost as good as you." Jack seemed to gather himself up for a moment. "There, uh, is no arrangement, is there?"

Feeling some sort of satisfaction, Cal looked straight at him. "Oh, there is, not that you'll benefit from it. I always win Jack, one way or another." He looked at Jack for another moment, before turning back to look at Rose. And he knew he would always feel triumph when he thought of the look on Jack's face when the realization hit him.

Cal continued to look down at Rose. When she stood up, he almost felt his heart stop. What on earth was she attempting to do? She made her way to the edge of the boat and jumped, barely getting a grip on the edge of Titanic. His cries mingled with Jack's as they both screamed for her to stop.
