After hours surfing the web I had one more go at trying to find out about GALS. I got one hit and it was your site! Needless to say, within 4 hours of finding your site I was the proud owner of 2 snails. As might be expected with any new parent (!) I'm st ll not totaly confidant that I'm doing everything correctly but repeated visits to the site has eased most worries. Just two questions...How damp/moist should they be kept and secondly what is a normal length of time for them to be burried per day? I was walking to school when I found a snail about to go into the sewer so I saved him from a smelly dealth and well I put him in my 50 gallan terraium and gave him lettuce. He was fine for a few days then he succtioned himself to the top of the aquarium. It's been 3 days that he won't come down and when I try to peal him off his shell makes a crunching sound so I stop trying to peel him off. What's wrong? Do you know?

A very useful site. We discovered it about ayear ago having tried desperately to find information on rearing African land snails locally. We now have a problem. Our snail has stopped eating and moving, and has taken to just hanging from the roof of the tank. It appears to have lost the will to live. Any suggestions? I should read your pages again, too much information to absorb in 10 minutes. However, I think your species is called Archachatina marginata suturalis, that is, if it has indeed an pinkish apex and columella. A. marginata marginata is larger and its shell lacks reddish colour. I have kept several species of Achatinidae (Achatina species, Limicolaria species, Archachatina species) in a terrarium for quite a while, without bothering too much about obtaining offspring. I had good results with Archatina ventri osa from Ivory Coast, but a friend did even better. I have no more specimens at present. That Achatina achatina is treatened or protected is nonsense, but importing live snails may be legally forbidden. They can contain nasty parasites in the mucus, I was recently told, nematodes I believe, so take care. There is much more literature on Achatinidae breeding than the paper by Plummer you mention. Also an interesting observation: My fulica lays eggs now and then, even though it has been on its own since being very small. They never hatch, as I presume they are infertile. I found your site listed on the Jacksonvile, Fl. website. I didn't know that people in the U.K. kept ACHATINA as pets. You can't import them here because an infestation in the '60s took several years and much money to cure. They love to eat sugar cane, bu the cane growers don't like sharing their crops with mollusks. The largest land snail native to florida is EUGLANDINA ROSEA, or the Rosey Wolfsnail. It has an attractive pink, bullet-shaped shell about 40 mm. long on average. I tried keeping them as pets when I was a child, but they would not eat the veggies that I fed them. This is because EUGLANDINA are are among the few types of landsnails that carnivorous. They eat smaller snails of different species. The state of Hawaii also had an infestation of ACH TINA FULICA. They tried the novell stratigy of importing EUGLANDINA to eat the ACHATINA. Unfortunatly, ACHATINA are too large for EUGLANDINA to eat, so the Wolfsnails started eating the unique native Hawaian snails instead. I went to Oahu about three year ago and went hunting for landsnails. I only found two species, ACHATINA FULICA and EUGLANDINA ROSEA! There is some thinks that are not so clear to me. I heard that it woud be good, if you would oil the shell before they lie in to the (I don't know the word in english, but hope you'll understand what I mean) "dormant". That shut cover the shell from drying too mutch and provide against scale off. I've tr ied it once or twice, but i'm not sure if its nessessery. atleast it makes shells shine. What do you think? And what else could help if shells starts to peel off? My tank has not been wet nough I think, and becouse they are still just babies the shell are more fragiled (?) Fascinating - the other half & I were having recent discussions as to whether snails could reproduce by themselves from being squashed!!. In other words, would you end up with a bunch of baby snails if you squashed one snail which had been ready to mate! He said thats why gardeners always collect them and drown or whatever them instead of squashing them. Any clues? We have heaps around at the moment and do a collection run every morning and put them into a coffee jar. Loved your "laid back" style. Very informative for someone who knew nothing about snails other than them having a shell and both male and female bits on the same animal. Keep up the good work.

I became interested in snails from doodling them on my college notes when I was studing the legal case of Donaghue v Stevenson (1932) in which a decomposing snail was found in a bottle of ginger beer. Thankyou i have been trying to find some info for sometime. I have five who don't have names as i would only get confussed,but know them apart in charater. Question: How old are GALs supposed to be before they lay eggs? I was told about two years old.But mine are just one year old now and have been laying eggs constantley for the past fortnight.Do you freeze them to kill the eggs or do you use another method?
