Hello everyone, my name is Marilyn, and I am a Diabetic. I wanted to create a page for Diabetics and their families, a place to come to for support and understanding, a place for us to gather, and to share our stories, I know we all have them!
Let me start off by telling you a little about myself, I went through my teenage years, suffering from Hypoglycemia, and it wasn't until 1974, when I had tests done to donate my brother a kidney, (he was a Diabetic since the age of three, from the Measles) and he was in his last stages of Diabetes, that I found out that I had it too! I was totally devastated, because even though we matched, they wouldn't take one of my kidneys. He lost his battle one year later, he was 31 years old, leaving behind a wife and five small children.
I on the other hand didn't go on Insulin until 1980, and it's been a rollercoaster ride for me ever since. For twelve years my Doctor kept me on Beef and Pork Insulin, my body built up so many antibodies to the Beef part of the Insulin, that my body rejected the Insulin. Last year I sought out a new Doctor, because my Doctor of twelve years, kind of gave me the brush-off. I am now going to the Diabetes Center (which I think is the best place to go to be treated) at the UN Medical Center in Omaha, they are the most wonderful group of Healthcare Professionals, that I have ever met, and they have gotten me back on the track with Humulin and Humalog. I went on the Disetronic Infusion Insulin Pump, April 23, 1998, and I love it, what a relief not to take injections 4 times a day!
February 26, 1999: Well it's been almost a year now since I went on the Pump, and I am doing real well. During my hospital stay last April, I had an Angiogram done, because I was have some pretty bad chest pains. They found a blocked artery, but didn't want to do surgery yet, so I am on medication ("Toprol XL"), which has pretty much eliminated the Angina attacks, but I still have the palpitations (more so when I'm stressed), and I am on medication ("Lipitor") for High Cholesterol, my Cholesterol level was 369, I'm not sure what it is right now, but I will update you when I find out.
The Company my Husband works for, changed Insurance Companies as of December 31st, well here's the kicker, I have to switch to all new Doctors, because my current Doctors weren't on their list, I wrote and asked them for a letter of acceptance (sometimes that works), they refused, now I have to switch, but luckily here in Omaha, we have two teaching Hospitals, that are two of the best in the country. I am switching to Creighton Medical Center, where they have an excellent Diabetes and Cardiology Center! Also this new Insurance Co. won't honor my prescription for test strips, so now I have to buy them first, then submit a bill, and they cut checks twice a month, I mean what's the difference? Does anyone out there have the answer to this dilema?
Do any of you out there have Diabetic Cataracts?
Well this was something new to me Diabetic Cataracts! I found out I have one in each eye now (I'm too young for Cataracts yet!), I guess we learn something new every day, don't we? One good thing though, the mild Retinopathy I have, has remained unchanged for four years!
Do any of you out there suffer from frozen joints?
That's been happening to me for the past four years, I've had two frozen shoulders (both had to be manipulated), and a frozen hip (which worked out on it's own after a year)!

Good news everyone!!!!....I was selected as one of 110 volunteers, in the whole United States, to participate in the Formal Field Trials of the Dream Beam Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Analyzer. I along with the other 109 volunteers, will be representing approximately 18 million people in the United States, that have Diabetes. This will be a truly awesome experience for us, because our results will decide whether the FDA approves this device, or not. Do you know what this means?....if our results are successful, and the FDA approves this Laser Device, it means millions of us Diabetics, and especially small children, will no longer have to stick our fingers to draw blood, which is very painful, and has to be done, four or more times a day. Our fingertips are sore, and it's hard to even get blood out of the fingers, when you do it day in, and day out. Please pray for us, that this will be a success, and I want to express to all of the Diabetics out there, that I am truly honored to be representing my fellow Diabetics, and your families, in this monumental experience!!!!
As of 6/18/99 the Manufacturer was still in need of non-caucasion (Afro/American, Native American, Hispanic and Asians) volunteers, who live in the United States. The volunteers are selected from every walk of life, education, and climate.....but you have to be able to follow instructions, and test your blood sugars at least four times a day, this is a must. All expenses and supplies are paid for by the Manufacturer. So if any of you out there, or you know of anyone who meets this critera, and wants to volunteer for this worthwhile cause, please send me an email, and I will tell you who to contact. Thank you very much!
July 14, 1999 Update
