Exporting from a WFT CD-ROM to
GEDCOM file, the WFT tree number (page number) is not included
in the Master Source citations. Exporting to a
FTW file, it is. With thousands of WFT
trees, and millions of individuals on each CDROM, missing the specific
tree number is a serious handicap. Considering that the exact same individual
— or like-named different individuals — may appear in numerous trees on
that CD, one may have a better chance finding a needle in a haystack than
finding the specific reference to which one of these citations refers.
-
The selection mechanisms for exporting part of a
file has no way to include
spouses' parents–
except to include them manually, one by one.

Spouses' parents
names are displayed, if available, in Descendant GenRpts, but there is
no way to export these individuals en mass. |

-
FTM puts a period
after abbreviated date words, such as
"ABT.". This is in violation of the published
GEDCOM Standard and detracts from the portability of these files —
which is supposed to be their raison d'être.
-
FTM creates invalid
GEDCOM for empty name "\\" with a source
citation. [HAD]
-
Cause of Death information will not
be included on export if there is no Date or Place
of Death recorded.

Beginning in version 5, one

Import
|
|
-
Importation of sources
is
not connected to the individuals imported (i.e. from GEDCOM or FTW files).
Regardless of which individuals are selected for import, including none,
all sources are always imported. This may result in a number of
unreferenced sources being imported.
-
Notes are appended to existing
notes without insertion of a Return character, causing the new notes to
be appended to the last line of the extant notes if the extant notes are
not terminated by a Return of their own. (GEDCOM, FTW)
-
GEDCOM and FTW import are
inconsistent in adding a trailing Return to new Notes. GED does; FTW doesn't.
-
GEDCOM and FTW import are
inconsistent in suppressing the append if the extant and new Notes are
identical. (FTW suppresses, GED does not)
-
A leading comma
is elided from Birth Location when importing
from GEDCOM. The leading comma is commonly used to indicate the absence
of a specific town or city. Such loss of information would change
", Fairfield, CT" to "Fairfield, CT", leading one to believe that the town
was referenced, when in fact it the county was intended. One wonders what
other subtle changes are performed.

Inconsistent citations obtained
when importing from WFT result in cases where only the citation for the
name has the box checked for "Include citation text in footnote". (The
text involved is the date of import.) The other fields (dates of birth,
death, &c) do not have this checked. The result is that the citations
appear different, causing
additional footnotes
in the citations section of GenRpts. Unchecking this box on the names in
one file reduced a 14 page GenRpt to 8 pages, simply by combining these
unnecessary citations.
