Family Tree Maker (TM) FAQ 041
I recently saw a NGS-style genealogy report that included a line that so-and-so "died dead." What's up with that?

The GEDCOM standard provides for certain keywords to be used in place of a specific date to acommodate situations where the date is not known, but the fact of the event is. For example, someone born 200 years ago is certainly dead, even if we don't know exactly when she died. This can be represented by "DEAD" in place of a death date.

Since FTM uses GEDCOM files as its import/export medium, it has to support these special keywords, too. The special date keywords permitted by FTM are:

  • Dead
  • Deceased
  • Stillborn
  • Child
  • Infant
The first two are only allowed in the "Died" field. The others are accepted in any date field.
The GEDCOM version 5.5 standard.

Note: These special keywords used in a "Born" field will sort to the end of a list under a "Sort Children" operation.
