Geobook
The Geobook is the Guestbook that GeoCities offers to the homesteaders. If you have a Geobook and someone left an offensive message in it, here are the steps to take care of it.
- Remove the links to the guestbook from your homepage.
- Make notes as to the date, time, name, email address (if one is left), homepage URL (if one is left) and the offensive content (for example: nude pictures, sexually explicit words, threats to harm you or your family.)
- Do not delete anything at this time!
- If you look at the "source" coding (view source, or view page source) for this file you will see something that looks like this !-- Remote Address: 123.123.12.1 -- . This is the IP number of the person who posted in your guestbook. The IP number is directly above the entry that it is referenced to. Note this number with the rest of the information you have already.
- Determine what Internet Provider the person who posted used.
- There is no need to change any of your passwords because the IP number is visible in the source code.
- Now that you have the name of the Internet Provider, you are ready to send a letter to the abuse department there. You can use the sample letter to write your own. MAKE SURE you have your parents permission, or have them send the letter.
Once you have received word back from the Internet Provider, you are ready to delete the offensive entry:
- Go to your file manager.
- Click the box beside geobook.html.
- Then click on edit file.
- Find the line that says < !-- Remote Address: (the IP number that you reported) -- >
- Hi-lite that line and down to the end of the entry (Stop when you get to the next < !-- Remote Address: (IP number ) -- >
- Delete, then SAVE.
- Now you can link your guestbook from your home page again..
