Subject: Your letter in the BEELD 1 September 2006
Dear Mr Van Wyk,
My name is Manuel Ferreira, and I was one of the organizers of the homage to 3 Portuguese soldiers, on the 30th of August.
I'm not going to discuss the merits of the article of Ms Erika Gibson, however in your response to her article, you remind Col Breytenbach, who she quotes, that black soldiers were awarded the Honoris Crux. You further give names of some of those brave soldiers, including S Sgt Roxo.
Let me bring to your attention that Francisco Daniel Roxo was white, unlike Sgt Robbie Ribeiro. Let me further remind you that, you did not do your home work properly before sending your letter to the BEELD. Col Breytenbach is refering to Operation Savannah in 1975, when his recomendation for an HC to Sgt Robbie Ribeiro was not approved. All the other black soldiers who deservely were awarded their HC, were awarded the decoration from 1978, by then the SADF "policy" had changed.
I think you owe Col Breytenbach an public apology!
Best regards,
Manuel Ferreira.
