This first bit was written and gradually embellished as the site has progressed - while things are starting to come together, I've left it intact for "historical purposes":
THE FIRST BIT:
Dundee is a right old hotbed of talented bands, as I'm rapidly finding out. But what is amazing me even more is that the local press and radio largely seem to ignore them, certainly judging by my initial experiences trying to get Dundee bands' music on the radio or anything mentioned in the local press, so, when something like this is the case, it needs someone - anyone - to start the ball rolling - and right now that someone,appears to be me.......
THE SECOND BIT:
......well, (since I wrote that) in terms of press, not true - Alan Wilson at The Courier in his weekly Rocktalk section, does a good job of letting people know what's happening to local bands and at local venues. But the radio is another story so I reckon we should mount a campaign to get a one hour slot on a local Dundee or surroundings radio station to feature Dundee talent as well as playing other Scottish unsigned and outside area unsigned/little known acts - or even to begin with, a mix of known and unknown for any radio station wanting to dip its toes in the water than dive in with both feet. Our recent 2 hour broadcast on Leith FM proved that myself and Electra can make a programme like this work and soon become something that will attract listeners in droves. Radio stations!! - I got my head screwed on, I talk a bit like John Peel, I have the ever so professional Electra on my side and I can make this work - are you listening!!!!
THE THIRD BIT:
......well, (since I wrote THAT), in terms of radio, the indie music scene has been enlivened no end with the return of the hour long Sunday night programme "The Weekender" on Tay-FM. OK, so we're still short on punk, metal and all the eclectic stuff, but in time that'll come - least I hope it wil!! Just recently Isis played the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen and they got played by Northsound Radio up there, so there's definitely interest out there - guess that knocking at the doors a bit harder may be the order of the day!!
BACK TO THE FIRST BIT:
So, this website will hopefully just be the beginning of Dundee's ascent into musical recognition on a much wider scale.
One section is intended to feature concert reviews, with another for reviews and contacts for any bands or artists that release music on CD which is quality stuff, worthy of your time and attention, and a whole lot more, as time goes by.
This all started with the reformation and return to live scene of Dundee's finest electronic music band, Altres, although I had caught a few concerts from local bands such as Rising Signs (a great gig) before I started this bit up.
While bands concerts largely get announced, there is little if any media coverage (See Second Bit and Third Bit above for correction of this original statement) of the many talented bands in this area and it is this that I hope to put right. I have several ideas in mind and it's a case of "Watch this space" for further news.
THE FOURTH BIT:
NOTE: The reviews on this site were all written in chronological order and have been deliberately left as they were originally written. None of the reviews has ever been "revisited" so my comments remain exactly as they were at time of writing! I also sometimes get accused of reviewing the "same old bands" - well, I review what inspires me - and if the "same old bands" continue to excite me, then I'll darn well tell you about it - anyway, where else are ya gonna find such a wide range of reviews - HONEST and GENUINE reviews - for the Dundee Scene (and beyond). As I always say - you need only read what interests you!!!
THE ALL-NEW FIFTH BIT:
The spotlight is even more on Dunde bands outside of Dundee than it has been to date - bands such as The View, The Law, Luva Anna, The Daze, The Peski Kings, Page 6 and The Leatherettes are getting ever more gigs outside of the city, while Glasgow, Edinburgh and, to a degree, Aberdeen, are finding out just how good a great many of the Dundee bands really are. In turn, Dundee is also finding that several of the new breed of Scottish bands are raising their game and, in a few cases, giving the Dundee scene a run for its money. All told, the Scottish music scene has never sounded so hot as it does right now - and the peak hasn't even remotely been reached yet - there's plenty more to come!!
