Milton's "grand old lady", Mrs. G. Hemstreet of 105 Mill Street, died Tuesday in St. Joseph's hospital in Hamilton at the age of 102. Her death followed an accident on Wednesday of last week when she fell and broke her hip.
The former Eliza Adelaide Leach, she was born in Oakville. In 1881 she was married to George A. Hemstreet, a native of Trafalgar township, and they moved to Milton where they spent the rest of their lives in the house Mr. Hemstreet built. He predeceased her in February of this year, at the age of 103, not long after they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. They held the distinction of being the oldest married couple in Canada.
Mrs. Hemstreet had been bedridden for the past several years. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. J. P. Bartleman (Laura).
She is resting at her late residence for funeral service on Friday at 2 pm. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery, Milton
