Mustangs eye threepeat

Posted By BRIAN SMILEY, Brantford Expositor

A couple of years ago, the Brant County high school senior football league decided to make a big change to its rules.

The league, which for years had been playing the American four-down version of the game, made the choice to open up things by going to the Canadian three-down style.

While this will mark just the third season for three-down play, there's no doubt the change has made a big difference in the excitement level of each game, not to mention the fact that Brant County is now developing some fine quarterbacks.

However, it appears that this year's the league should feature a pretty strong ground attack as four of the five teams in the senior loop have exceptional runners. And the fifth team may not yet boast an explosive threat but it has an off ensive line that features five giants, who will open up the holes necessary to gain valuable real estate.

The Assumption College Lions feature the tandem of Steve Domotor and Brandon Flicks, a pair of speedsters who can outrun almost any defender in the league.

In Kyle Giancola, Brantford Collegiate Institute possesses not only the premier fullback in the league but possibly in this region. Look for Giancola to pound out some big yardage for the Mustangs.

Cody Penwarden may not be as flashy or as hyped as the above mentioned backs but he'll pick up some big yards for the North Park Collegiate Trojans.

St. John's College has had its share of great backs over the years and Graham McKelvey is continuing that trend. More well known for his outstanding play on the rugby pitch, look for McKelvey to have a huge season.

And then there's Pauline Johnson Collegiate. The Thunderbirds normally have a strong running attack with skilled backs but so far the team hasn't settled on one feature back.

However, with a line that boasts four 300-pounders, the T-Birds have the beef to allow any runner to eat up some serious yardage.

With what looks to be a balanced league in terms of running backs, creeps over into the entire lookout for the five-team loop.

There doesn't appear to be one team that will dominate but five pretty solid squads that all have a legitimate shot at the Brant County championship.

So, when the season starts on Wednesday, we'll let the BCI Mustangs hold on to the label of favourite, since they are the defending champions.

It appears their most serious challenge will come from Assumption, which has something to prove after finishing first in last year's regular season only to be bounced by fourth-place BCI in the semifinals.

The other big challenge should come from the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds, who earlier this decade had a run of three-straight senior championships. PJC has some solid seniors back this season plus some juniors up from a championship team from a couple of seasons ago.

The other two teams cannot be counted out.

St. John's College made it all the way to the final last year but the Green Eagles lost some key members from that team. The Eagles will be a little younger this year but they're always competitive.

And the Trojans looked ready to turn a corner with their program last year, playing several close games but coming out on the wrong side of those decisions too many times.

North Park should give every team in the league a battle and it could be the surprise team of the season.

The following is a brief team-by- team preview for the senior season:

ACS LIONS: 'A LOT OF DEPTH'

After spending considerable time building a program, the Lions seemed to be on the cusp of their first-ever senior championship last season -and then BCI came to life in the semifinals.

This season, Assumption is back with a strong and talented team that lacks in just one crucial area.

"We don't have a lot of depth on either side of the line," coach Kelly Ireland said. "We have depth at the skill positions but our (offensive) line is where we lost people."

ACS has 18 starters back from last year's 24 but the six who left were all linemen.

Ireland, a former offensive lineman at SJC and Saint Mary's University, will use his skills and acquired knowledge to mentor that group.

Overall, Ireland is pretty pleased with what he's seen.

"The kids are still learning," he said. "Offensively I think we're going to be fairly balanced and defensively we're strong."

BCI MUSTANGS: 'LINEBACKERS ARE SOLID'

BCI has always had a reputation for having strong leadership on its football teams.

Last year two players in particular -Phil Aslin and Benton Gibbons -were the ones leading the charge but this year the Mustangs will have to look elsewhere.

"We lost Ben Gibbons and Phil Aslin and it's hard to replace those guys but you have to," said coach Dave Giancola. "They were last year's leaders."

Giancola said the Mustangs have about 45 bodies out and he's pleased with what he sees. The coach believes this year's team may be better in one area.

"I think our passing game might be better than last year's," he said. "Our running game should be the same, if not better.

"Defensively, up the middle, we're not as strong as we were but our linebackers and defensive backs, I'm pleasantly surprised by them."

Giancola said the defence will have to concentrate on a certain thing.

"We need to stuff the run," he said. "Our linebackers are solid so we should be OK."

NPC TROJANS: 'PROGRAM IS BUILDING'

Last season was up-and-down for North Park.

On occasion, the Trojans were blown out. At other times, while the score may have indicated otherwise, North Park played about as well as any other team in the league.

In the past, depth has been an issue for NPC but this season the Trojans look solid in that regard.

"We're probably in the mid-30s now so we have some decent numbers," NPC coach John Minutillo said. "And we had a good camp."

Whether that translates into success on the field has yet to be determined but there's no doubt the Trojans look to be a team on the rise.

"We had some heart-breaking losses last year so this year we're looking to be competitive again," said Minutillo. "I think our program is building. I think we had about 70 juniors (at tryouts)."

Minutillo said the team this year looks good on the side of the field that doesn't snap the ball.

"I think our strength will be our defence," he said. "Hopefully we can move the ball on off ence. I think we have a lot of guys on off ence we can get the ball to. It's nice to have some diversity."

PJC THUNDERBIRDS: 'WE SHOULD CONTEND'

For most of this decade, Pauline Johnson and BCI have gone back and forth with the senior championship.

After a couple of years of watching the Mustangs take home the trophy, PJC won three times in a row from 2004-06. And the T-Birds are ready to take back the trophy.

PJC coach Ken Chisholm has to be excited with his line, including tackles Dave Delafosse and Jake Wickson, who both stand in the six-foot-six, 310-pound range.

"Our strength is our experience and overall size," said the coach. "We have four 300-pounders and they all move."

Chisholm said he expects his offensive line to shine, going so far as to say it may be the best he's ever had.

"The thing is, they're not just big, they're athletic. We can pull, we can trap, there's lots of versatility there."

Chisholm said that, overall, the team is strong on both sides of the ball.

"We seem to be very balanced," he said. "The only hole we have right now is (defensive) line."

To break up BCI's run to a threepeat, Chisholm said there's one key for the Thunderbirds.

"If we stay healthy, we should contend."

SJC GREEN EAGLES: 'TOUGH THIS YEAR'

St. John's had a tremendous regular season a year ago, going 5-1 and finishing second in the league before winning a semifinal game against PJ and then losing to BCI in the championship.

St. John's is back but with a different look.

"We're going to have to depend on our fifth-year players," said coach Dave Millette. "We only have seven or eight fifth-year players.

"We have so many young guys. I would have had another seven returnees but they left to go to (university)."

One positive for the Eagles is that they have solid players coming down the pipe.

"The one thing that's good is we have some players from (last year's) junior championship team coming up," he said.

"It may be tough this year but in a couple of years we're going to be real good."

Back to this year, Millette said the ground attack will be key.

"I think our running game is going to be pretty good," he said. "Our passing game isn't going to be high-flying and our defence is going to be one of our strengths."

Mustangs set sights on CWOSSA gold
by Tom Kennedy www,brantford.com

The Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs senior football team plans to hit the field with purpose when they start the Brant County high school season next week.

In a rematch of last season’s championship game, defending Brant County champion and Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association silver medalist Mustangs will meet the St. John’s College Green Eagles at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre fields at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.

They may have exceeded expectations and projections last year but the Mustangs intend on winning CWOSSA gold this year and offensive weapon Kyle Giancola is back as a Grade 13 student aiming to help them reach that goal.

Mustangs’ head coach Dave Giancola said while his team lost some important members of last year’s squad, others, such as his son Kyle have returned with the hope of performing even better than last year.

“I guarantee the guys are coming back for another year. That’s their goal, that’s in their minds,” he said.

The Mustangs have retained eight starters from last year’s offensive team including Giancola and quarterback Kenzi Kelly but have lost Benton Gibbons, Phil Aslin and Colt Martin.

Last year, the Mustangs went from fourth place in the regular season to Brant County champions then went on to steal a CWOSSA semi-final win from the hands of the Port Elgin Royals before losing 43-0 to the Resurrection Catholic Secondary School Phoenix in the CWOSSA final.

This season, coach Giancola said his team should be able to repeat the success of last season and that they would aim even higher and that his son’s powerful running game would again be a big part of their game plan.

“We’re pretty confident that we can do it again, that’s our goal,” he said. “He’s [Kyle} agile too, he’s not just a big guy … He will be a big part, I don’t think that’s a surprise to any teams.”

The 2009/10 Brant County high school sports season gets underway with fall football next week with the North Park Collegiate Trojans heading to Assumption College to take on the Lions (senior at 3 p.m., junior at 5 p.m.), the Mustangs meeting the Green Eagles at the Gretzky fields (senior at 6 p.m., junior at 8 p.m.) and the junior Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds playing the first Paris District High School Panthers football team to take the field in more than 40 years.

Team: Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs/senior.
Coach: Dave Giancola.
Performance last year: Won BCSSAA, CWOSSA silver medal.
Players to watch for: Kyle Giancola (running back), John Archibald (wide receiver), Kenzi Kelly (quarterback), Jim Scheel (linebacker), Joe Kitchen (defensive back) and Garrett Waud (defensive lineman).

Coach said: “If we win another city championship, I think we can win CWOSSA.”

Team: St. John’s College Green Eagles/senior.
Coach: Dave Millette.
Performance last year: Runners up in BCSSAA championship, defeated by Mustangs.
Players to watch for: Graham McKelvey (running back), Justin Chan (quarter back), Shawn Hill (wide receiver), Mario Pani (linebacker), Michael Cruz (linebacker) and James McVicar (safety).

Coach said: “We’re going to be pretty similar to last season. Definitely a high priority for us is a strong passing game but also a strong running game. We’ll be looking to play wideout.”

Team: Assumption College Lions/senior.
Coach: Kelly Ireland.
Performance last year: First in regular season, knocked out of playoffs by Mustangs.
Players to watch for: Connor Quinn (quarterback), Paul Hoo (running back), Steve Domotor (running back), Rhys Tansley (linebacker), Brodie Tansley (defensive back) and Tyson Leeb (linebacker).

Coach said: “We didn’t have a lot of depth last year and we had a lot of injuries. This year we’ve got a lot of depth with 18 starters returning … I think they’re more focused after what happened last year.”

Team: Pauline Johnson Collegiate/senior.
Coach: Ken Chisholm.
Record last year: Third in BCSSAA regular season, knocked out of playoffs by Green Eagles.
Players to watch for: Dave Delafosse (offensive tackle), Jake Wickson (offensive tackle), Josh Stone (centre), Mike Kellam (quarterback), Mitch Brown (defensive back) and Dylan Dawson (linebacker).

Coach said: “We’re feeling pretty optimistic. We’ve got some speed, some size and some smarts.”

Chisholm went on to say his team will feature a very athletic offensive line with an average weight of 280 pounds which will act to bolster the running style game of quarterback Mike Kellam.

Team: North Park Collegiate Trojans/senior.
Coach: John Minutillo.
Performance last year: Last in BCSSAA regular season/did not qualify for playoffs.
Players to watch for: Paul Longboat (offensive/defensive lineman) and Tyler Marvin (linebacker).

Coach said: “Our goal is to make the playoffs, last year we lost some key games that really hurt us … We’ve got some great kids but we’re just working on skills and trying to polish everything up.”

Minutillo also said his team would need to have a healthy balance of air and ground football to be competitive in this league.

In the Brant County high school junior football season, the five-team league has returned to six-team status after more than 40 years without the Paris District High School Panthers.

The high school put together a football committee last season and, through fundraising and community donations, was able to field a junior team this season with the intention of continuing the program and eventually developing a senior team also.

Team: Paris District High School Panthers/junior.
Coach: Steve Fergus.
Record last year: Did not compete.
Players to watch for: John Timon (linebacker), Carter Mitchell (defensive lineman) and Philip James (running back).

Coach said: “They look good. They’re starting to come together as a team but we’ll still have to see how they perform.”

“The kids sure have learned a lot, now it’s a question of whether they can put it into practice.”

The Mustangs, Green Eagles, Thunderbirds and Lions seniors will meet this Friday, September 11 at Assumption College at 4 p.m. to face each other in a 10-down controlled scrimmage scenario as a pre-season warmup before the real deal gets underway next week.
