2. John Wade "Johnny" (William ) died after 1871 in Caplin Bay, NF.
It is likely that Johnny Wade was the son of William Wade, although there are no written records to verify this assumption. Assumption is also the basis for identifying the next generation; Mary and Catherine Wade are assumed to be the daughters of Johnny Wade.
Johnny Wade's name first appears on the Voter's List at Caplin Bay in 1855, and again in 1859. In Lovell's Directory of 1871, he is listed at Caplin Bay as a farmer. Local oral tradition concerning Johnny Wade tends to paint a picture of a man who spent considerable time and effort clearing the land still referred to as Wade's Meadow. Fisherman, going to the fishing grounds very early in the morning, told of seeing Johnny Wade sitting on the cliffs above the cove, with his legs dangling over the edge, obviously resting from a hard night's work.
The fact that he worked at night and slept during the day was considered rather strange by the local population. This "eccentricity", coupled with a strong Irish belief in "the faires", led many to speculate that the large boulders moved during the land clearing could only have been moved with the help of the "little people". Superstition aside, Johnny was probably a very practical man. The cool clear moonlit nights on the cliffs overlooking Caplin Bay were certainly more favorable for hard labour than working in the mid-day heat. Obviously a strong man, with a good mastery of basis tools, Johnny skills as a farmer were lost on his superstitious neighbours.
In 1870 Johnny's land at Stone Island was indexed by Crown Lands as follows:
Index # 3119 Wade, John: Stone Island, Caplin Bay. The land was registered and described in Volume 16, Folio 107. Unfortunately this volume was destroyed, supposedly in the St. John's Fire of 1892.
It is not known when Johnny Wade died. His death is not listed in the Vital Statistics records which start in 1891. This would indicate that he probably died some time between 1871 and 1891.
John married Martha about 1852. Martha was born 1 about 1826 in Aquaforte, NF. She died 2 on 17 May 1891 in Caplin Bay, NF. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.
Martha's maiden name is not known at this time. Her Vital Statistics death record states she was born at Aquaforte.
They had the following children:
3 F i Mary Wade was born 1 about 1853 in Caplin Bay, NF. She died 2 on 12 Oct 1905 in Caplin Bay, NF. The cause of death was dyspepsia. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery. 4 F ii Catherine Wade "Kitty" was born 1 in May 1859 in Caplin Bay, NF. She died 2 on 22 Dec 1934 in Calvert, NF. The cause of death was old age. She was buried in Ferryland RC Cemetery.
According to local oral tradition, Kitty Wade was the last person to move from Stone Island to the main settlement of Caplin Bay. She never married and lived alone at Stone Island for a number of years. After Kitty moved to Caplin Bay she lived on land belonging to Tom Meany at the foot of Galavin's Hill, east of where the second generation of Sullivans had settled when they moved from Stone Island. Her property, on the west side of Stone Island River, known as Wade's Meadow, eventually became the property of the Sullivans (Martin).
The 1921 Census says she was born at Caplin Bay in May 1859, however her death certificate says she was born in Ferryland and she was 82 when she died in 1934. This would place her birth about 1852. It is not known which age is correct or if she was actually born at Ferryland.
