The Sweetland family were an English merchant family with business interests at Ferryland in the last three decades of the 1700s. However, after Henry Sweetland Sr. died in 1797 and his widow married Matthew Morry, merchant of Caplin Bay in the early 1800s, the sons of Henry Sweetland re-established themselves as merchants at Caplin Bay. The family eventually left the area in the 1830s and are found in Devon, England; Bonavista and Trinity, Newfoundland and Brooklyn, New York in later years.
