The Stephenson family came to Burin, Newfoundland from Poole, Dorset, England about 1804. Dr. George Stephenson, who was the doctor at Burin for a number of years, died and was buried there. Although most of his family returned to England, his son John stayed in Newfoundland. In the early 1840s, John is found living at Caplin Bay as the Deputy Sheriff of the Southern District. Later in the same decade John moved to Ferryland when he was promoted to Sheriff of the Southern District. He died at Ferryland in 1872.
