The Cannings of Ferryland and Calvert (Caplin Bay), Newfoundland.

The Cannings of Calvert are descended from Alfred Canning who was born in Ferryland. He was taken in by Mrs. Eliza Morry, widow of Matthew Morry III. of Caplin Bay. He grew up in the Morry household and married Mary Swain, grand-daughter of Robert Swain of Stone Island. He and his family lived, with Miss Elizabeth (Lizzie) Morry, in the old family house called Athlone Cottage. They looked after Miss Morry until she died in 1930. Alfred's only surviving son, Leonard, had a family of six daughters but no sons to carry on the family name.
