NEWS

·      October 11, 2005: Team Easton (photo) represented the GOFL very well all year, especially in the Regional Final.  Members of the GOFL champions for 2005 are:  Kevin Chevrier (captain), John Peck, Randy Peck, Dan Konkle, Todd Fraser, Al Read, Darrell Warren, Dave Tubman, Cory Morrison, Kyle Olson, Adam Seabrook, Bill Gerber and Scott Garrod.

·      October 8, 2005:  Congratulations to the Micksburg Twins who won the Regional Final play off series.  Team Easton won Game 2 on October 7 in Micksburg by a score of 4-0, setting up the Game 3 “mini-game” immediately following, which turned into an eight inning battle.  Corey Costello hit a solo walk-off home run to win the final game by a score of 1-0.  See the story for the complete details.

·      October 5, 2005:  Micksburg won game one of the Regional Finals by a score of 4-0 over Team Easton in Stittsville.  The game was played under beautiful conditions in front of a decent crowd, which included several members of the Ottawa U GeeGees Women’s Fastball team.  Corey Costello was the winning pitcher throwing a no hitter, facing only 22 batters.  The only Easton runner, Kevin Chevrier, reached on an error in the fourth.  Costello also drove in two runs, including a solo HR.  Dan Konkle took the loss, but only allowed five hits.  Full details available here.  Game two will be played Friday night October 7th at 8PM in Micksburg.  If the weather cooperates, a large crowd is expected on hand.

·      September 30, 2005:  Games one and two of the regional finals are set – Tuesday Oct 4 8PM in Stittsville and Friday Oct 7 8PM in Micksburg.

·      September 30, 2005:  ISC II stats are now available for the ToC in Wisconsin.  Team Easton stats.  Notable performances:  Kevin “All World Chevy” Chevrier led the team with a .611 batting average.  Shawn Costello had a .412 batting average with two homers, drew four walks and the top team slugging percentage of .765.  Corey Costello led the team with seven RBI with two homers and a .333 batting average.  Dave Tubman had two triples and four RBI.  The team hit .332 and left 47 runners on base in seven games.  Corey Costello had a 0.62 ERA, with 4-1 record and 47 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.  Dan Bradley had a 1.35 ERA, a 1-0 record and had 23 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.  Dan Konkle struck out 25 batters over 13 innings.  As a team, the fielding percentage was .982 with only three errors in seven games.

·      September 30, 2005:  The league playoff report and the final rankings for ISC II teams in Ontario are now available.  Ottawa Team Easton was ranked fourth in the province and Micksburg was given “honourable mention”.

·      September 28, 2005:  Micksburg Twins wins the UOVMFL playoff series 4 games to 2 over the Campbell’s Bay Royals, with a 5-2 victory in Bryson last night.  Micksburg will now face Team Easton in a “regional final” – dates to be announced.

·      September 22, 2005: Team Easton won its third consecutive GOFL title on the strength of a 3 hit complete game from hard throwing right hander Dan Konkle in a 2-1 victory.   Easton scored first as Dave Tubman reached on error to lead off the third. Kevin Chevrier followed with a ground ball to the Stittsville second baseman that was "Bill Bucknered" allowing Tubman to advance to third and Chevrier to first. Tubman then scored on Randy Peck's ground ball to first base. The second Easton run came in the fifth inning. With one out, Tubman and Chevier hit back to back singles to ignite the offence. Easton then caught the 56ers napping. With 3rd baseman Scott Parsons protecting against the bunt, and SS Scott Herriot shading up the middle, Tubman was able to swipe third uncontested in the front end of a double steal. Randy Peck was then walked to load the bases, but brother John Peck lifted a fly ball to center field to score Tubman from third. Dan Konkle grounded out to end the inning. Despite another solid pitching performance from 56er hurler Dan Bradley, the 56ers offence again struggled to provide any run support. Not until the seventh inning, with their backs against the wall, did Stittsville manage to push a run across. Ryan Bond started the inning with a lead off walk, Followed by a Darren Featherstone single. Scott Jessiman was called to sacrifice and laid down a nice bunt that was fielded cleanly by Easton's John Peck. Peck decided to take the lead runner, however his throw hit Bond as he was sliding into third. With the bases juiced and no one out John Craig hit a ground ball to Easton SS Darrell Warren, which scored Ladouceur (now running for the injured Bond) and advanced Jessiman and Featherstone. That run was all Stittsville would get as Konkle was able to bear down and strike out Scott Parsons for the key second out, and induce a series ending ground ball from Scott Herriot. Kudos to both clubs for an intense and closely played series, and congratulations to Team Easton on winning their third consecutive title.  (Thanks to Sam Oliver for his game reports during the finals.)

·      September 19, 2005:  In Game 3 of the GOFL finals, Team Easton got out of the gate quick and never looked back.  Easton catalyst Kevin Chevrier hit a one out single in the top of the first to get things going. A Todd Fraser walk, a double by Randy Peck, a Dan Bradley throwing error, and a Dan Konkle single combined to account for three Easton runs.  Although the 56ers threatened a number of times during the game, a solo HR by third baseman Scott Parsons was the only run they managed to push across. Todd Fraser also homered for Easton, who now lead the series 2 - 1.  Game four of the series will be played Wednesday night, a 7:30PM start time at the Alexander Grove Ball Diamond in Stittsville.  (Game report by Sam Oliver.)

·      September 19, 2005:  Corey Costello is back pitching in top form for the Micksburg Twins as they took a three games to two lead in the Upper Ottawa Valley finals best of seven series.  Costello threw a one-hitter with fifteen strikeouts in a 3-0 defeat of the Campbell’s Bay Royals on Sunday night in Micksburg. (Game 5 was originally scheduled for Friday but was rained out.)  The Royals will host the Twins in game 6 on Thursday at 8:00PM in Bryson, QC.

·      September 15, 2005:  For fastball reports on intermediate leagues, including the GOFL, visit http://www.fastpitchwest.com/thedeuce.

·      September 14, 2005:  With Corey Costello out with a knee injury, Campbell’s Bay beat Micksburg 4-3 in Game 4 of the Upper Ottawa Valley finals to even the series at two games apiece.  Game 5 is Friday night in Micksburg at 8:30PM with Costello being a tentative starter. Game 3 in the GOFL finals has been confirmed for tonight, Weds Sept 14 at 9PM in Stittsville.

·      September 13, 2005:  Some great photographs from the ISC II Tournament of Champions in Wisconsin are available at www.botpix.com.

·      September 12, 2005: Stittsville won Game 2 of the league finals by a score of 1-0.  Pitching and defence were showcased in this entertaining and well-played ball game.   Stittsville got out to an early lead scoring one run in the first - a run that turned out to be the game winner.   56ers SS, Scott Herriot lead off the game with a single to left field and DP Greg McMillan followed with a walk. Catcher, Sam Oliver, hit a sharp ground ball up the middle that was fielded by Easton shortstop Darryl Warren. Unfortunately for Easton, what appeared to be a sure double play ball turned into the only run of the ball game. After collecting the force out at second, Warren's relay to first was errant and found the dugout advancing Herriot to home and Oliver to second.   An apparently ailing Dan Konkle escaped the first without further damage. Stittsville threatened again in the second putting runners on first and second with one out, but once again Konkle was able to shut the door. However, he wasn't able to continue, and was relieved in the third inning by Bill Gerber who was brilliant in relief, not allowing a run while only giving up two hits.   For the 56ers, Dan Bradley pitched an excellent ball game. He gave up only two hits and didn't allow a runner past second base for the entire seven innings. Easton's biggest threat came in the 3rd inning. Dan Konkle led off the inning with a double to the left-centerfield gap. Al Read followed with a flare to right that looked like it might find the grass, however, 56er RF Darren Ladouceur came up with the running shoe string catch for the first out. Bradley then responded with a key strike out of the dangerous hitting Easton CF Dave Tubman, and induced an inning ending fly ball from the hot hitting Easton captain Kevin Chevrier.  Game 3 of the series has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 14, with a 9:00PM start. There is a possibility that the game could be moved to Thursday, September 15, to facilitate an earlier (7:30PM) start time. All games for the series will be played at the Alexander Grove ball diamond in Stittsville.  (Thanks again to Sam Oliver for the game report.)

·      September 8, 2005: Kanata Team Easton won Game 1 of the league finals by a score of 6-4 over the Stittsville 56ers.  An intense ball game, ultimately decided by the long ball.  The 56ers got off to a quick start, staking a 3 - 0 lead after two innings, highlighted by a Greg McMillan 2 run HR. In the third, Dan Konkle seemed to settle in, and the momentum shifted in Easton’s favor.   Easton scored two runs in each of the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to take a 6 - 3 lead. HRs by John Peck and Dave Tubman along with a two run double by Todd Fraser were the keys to the Easton attack.   Stittsville mounted a charge in the bottom of the seventh, but could only manage one run, leaving the tying runs on second and third.   Game two of the series will be played Sunday night; a 7:30PM start time at the Alexander Grove Ball Diamond in Stittsville.  (Thanks to Sam Oliver for the game report.)

·      September 6, 2005:  The GOFL finals will start Wednesday September 7 in Stittsville at 9PM, as the 56ers face Kanata Team Easton in the best of five final.  In the UOVMFL final, Micksburg currently leads Campbell’s Bay 2 games to 0 in the best of seven final.

·      September 5, 2005:  Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric came up just short at the twelve-team OASA Men’s Intermediate C Provincial tournament, returning from Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls with silver medals.  Fitzroy defeated Colborne Merchants (7-3), Lake Simcoe Lightning (3-1) and Belmore Stingers (2-1) to go undefeated into the final.  Belmore came back up through the loser’s side and faced Fitzroy Harbour in the final, defeating the WC Electric in both games 7-1 and 4-1.  Belmore pitcher Scott Smith was the MVP of the tournament.  Smith was the most valuable pitcher at the 2004 ISC II Tournament of Champions in North Dakota.  Blackburn Bombers finished fourth in the tournament, losing to the third place Lake Simcoe Lightning.

·      September 1, 2005:  Finalists have been determined for the GOFL best-of-five series.  Stittsville 56ers swept Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric 3 games to none.  Dan Bradley allowed just one run in 21 innings of work and had all three wins.  Kanata Team Easton also swept Manotick Lomor Printers.  Dan Konkle won two games, both by shutouts, and allowed just one hit in 12 innings.  Bill Gerber had the other win for Kanata.  Team Easton were the playoff champions in 2003 and 2004. The schedule, once determined, will be posted on this page.

·      September 1, 2005:  In the RA League, the Ottawa Valley Raiders repeated as league champions, defeating the Atlantic Storm two games to one.

·      August 31, 2005:  Some news from other eastern Ontario playoffs: North Leeds Men’s Fastball League playoff championship has been won by Newboro Rideau Insurance who defeated the Landsdown Longhorns 2-1-2 in a 6 point series.  This was Newboro’s first title since 1999.   In the Ottawa RA league, the Ottawa Valley Raiders are facing the Ottawa Atlantic Storm in the finals with the best of three tied at one game each.  The deciding game is scheduled to be played tonight, weather permitting.  In the Upper Ottawa Valley Men’s Fastball League, the best of seven finals have started, and Micksburg won game one by a score of 8-0 over Campbell’s Bay.  Corey Costello had 18 strikeouts and threw a one-hitter in the victory. Game 2 will be played Friday night in Bryson, QC.

·      August 25, 2005:  The three pitchers from the ISC II #3 Ottawa Team Easton Thunder squad all excelled after their return from the Tournament of Champions in Wisconsin.  At Stittsville: Dan Bradley, pitching for Stittsville 56ers, threw a two hit complete game shutout over the Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric in a 1-0 victory.  Bradley had seven strikeouts in the victory.  Fitzroy Harbour pitcher Brad Porter, a pitcher on the 2004 roster for the Thunder, also threw a two hitter - the only run was unearned.  At Manotick: Dan Konkle, pitching for Kanata Team Easton, threw a one hit complete game shutout over the Manotick Lomor Printers in a 5-0 victory.  Konkle had eighteen strikeouts in the victory, and did not go to more than two balls on any batter.  At Beachburg: Corey Costello, pitching for the Micksburg Twins, threw a perfect game, his second of the season, in a 7-0 victory over Beachburg NRTco.  Costello had sixteen strikeouts in the win.  Micksburg defeated Beachburg three games to none and now move on the Upper Ottawa Valley Men's Fastball League final against Campbell's Bay Royals.  In one night combined totals for Bradley, Konkle and Costello:  21 innings, 0 runs allowed, 3 hits, 3 walks, 41 strikeouts.

·      August 25, 2005:  Attention readers of Al’s Fastball escribe site.  A message from Al Doran: eScribe is down and maybe out, maybe for good.  eScribe went down over a week ago, just as the ISC's were getting underway. This is not the first time they have crashed and been down for more than a few hours. In June 2004 they went down and were down for weeks while the owner bought and set up all new servers.  eScribe is privately owned, my company has nothing to do with it.  Al's Fastball is just one of hundreds of list servers that make use of the services provided by eScribe. This service has always been free.  Last year in June we learned that the owner, Scott Paterson, was working with a couple of unpaid volunteers to keep eScribe going. He had to buy expensive computer equipment to replace the servers that had worn out and died.  This week we learned that they major technical problems and the prognosis is not good. See Scott's note to me today: Al - Dead power supply and lack of financial support and non-paid volunteers. Going to try to fix it myself as soon as I have time, but really, with no end-user financial support, it's most likely done for. –Scott This does not sound good.  Thousands of fastball fans miss their easy access to recent posts AND to a virtual gold mine of history on the game, posts from the past several years.  We are encouraging Scott to carry on, which is not easy as he cannot receive email any longer @escribe.com, the system is totally down.  We do write the occasional very short note to Scott at his work address but I cannot give this out, his employer frowns upon getting private email at his work place.  In the interim, we have been using Jim Flanagan's TEMP site, as our only site for posting fastball news. That site is: http://www.fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball. For now we are not calling it the TEMP site, its our only site at the moment.  We are looking at other options as the temp site does have some drawbacks, including the fact that the latest postings are at the bottom of the page and not the top. As well, if someone sends me a post and then changes their mind, its not that easy to remove the post in error as eScribe was.  Jim Flanagan has very kindly provided this site and I would most appreciate if you could tell your friends about it, many fans may not know about it. We have almost 2,000 fans on our subscriber list but we estimate there are at least that many who were looking daily at eScribe to get their fastball news.  Thanks Al.

·      August 24, 2005:  The Williamsburg tournament is looking for more teams to round out their field of ten.  There is a three game guarantee, $325 entry fee.  Top prize is $1000, runner up gets $600.  Last year donations were made to Ottawa Cancer Research Centre and the Diabetes Association for $1600.  Contact Lyle at 535-1852 for more information.

·      August 24, 2005:  The site recently surpassed 10,000 hits – a pretty good total for the two seasons in which it has been in existence.

·      August 24, 2005:  Al’s Fastball site at Escribe is offline at this time, but there is a temporary site for fastball fans at http://www.fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball.  The playoff preview is posted there.
