DRIVERS

If you right click/properties on the your computer icon on the desktop, or go to Start/Control Panel/system/Hardware Tab/Device Manager Button

You will be in what is called the Device Manager.  Here you can view driver details about your installed hardware.  What you need to do is look for any yellow exclamation marks.  I have one shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5

You can see the yellow exclamation mark under Other devices, beside the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller.  This means that there is problem with this device.  The problem is usually a driver conflict, or lack of drivers.  Expand the other devices by clicking the small plus sign next to it to see if there are any other yellow exclamation marks.

So how do you fix any problems you find here?  Just right click and select properties.  For my USB Controller problem, my properties say that there are no drivers installed.  It is simply a matter of clicking the Update Driver button and letting windows install the drivers for me.  I suggest letting windows connect to windows update, this time only button, to look for updated drivers.  You will have to connect to the internet first if you are on dial up.

If windows has problems updating your drivers, then I would suggest right click/uninstall the device.  Then reboot your computer and windows will install the drivers when it loads up.  Have your WinXP CD handy in case it asks for it.  If this fails to fix the problem, then do an internet search for that device.  There will probably be special drivers available that you can download for it.

This brings us to a very important point.  Keeping your drivers up to date.  If you have a product such as Dell or HP, simply go to their website and download any updates for your computer model.  I would check at least every couple of weeks.
