Mango the Black Headed Caique:
Mango is so glad you came to visit him. Mango is a male
Black Headed Caique. Mango's hatch date is Feb. 22, 1999.
He came to live with us July 17,1999 at the age of five months.
He had his DNA test done July 18, 1999 and he is a little male.
Mango's father's name is Mr. Monster and his mom is Monster's
Mrs. Monster. His parents are domestic bred and owned by
Sylvia Glemser. Mr. & Mrs. Monster was org. owned by
Mr. John Doole in Winnipeg, MB. Sylvia bought Mango's parents
and grandparents from Mr. Doole. Mango is one of the first second
generation Caique's to be hatched in Canada.
Mr. John Doole named Mango's dad Mr. Monster because he felt
that he was one of the biggest and spunkiest Caiques he had ever
hatched. Mango is also a very large and spunky caique.
Most of the caiques in Canada are in some way related to the
caiques hatched by Mr. John Doyle or Sylvia Glemser.
Mango may give me an heart attack if he keeps moving the way
that he does. I have never seen a bird twist and turn over like
Mango does. He is a bundle of energy.
When he is not playing he is eating. He loves to eat. He also loves
to go outside with me. It's going to be impossible not to spoil him,
but I think he is already spoiled. I am making the big mistake of
running to pick him up every time he calls me.
I have taken him to work with me a few times and he really likes being
at my office. He will go with anyone at work and he loves all of the
attention he gets from the staff at the office. There is also a large
window and he can watch the people walking by and all of the
traffic and the TTC street cars go by. People look in the window
and wave to him and it makes him real happy.

What Mango likes to eat:
Aug. 01,1999:
So far he is eating apples, pears, peaches, mangos,
kewi fruit, pineapple, raspberries, grapes, oranges,
watermelon and many other types of melons
He loves raspberries, apples and peaches and he
loves the applesauce made with apples, mangos and
peaches. He don't seem to care for strawberries all
that much yet but he eats some blueberries.
He likes corn and sweet potaotes and he will eat
a bit of celery and nibble on greens. The other
vegetables he is just testing out yet. He eats a
little bit of cheese and he likes chicken rice soup
with crackers. He is still only four and a half months
old so he has a lot of foods to test out yet. He likes
pasta and I have bought a pkg. of brown rice with
seven different types of rice to cook for him.
I found a site on the Internet that said all birds
loved puffed corn, popping corn cooked for a couple
of hours until soft. I made that but Mango do not
care for it very much and neither do Crockett and
Freckles. I tried adding butter but that didn't work
except for Crockett trying to get the butter. Crockett
loves butter. In Crockett's case I have always given
him cheese, butter and crackers and butter on his food.
Crockett also loves pizza. Most Vets. will tell you
not to give them fatty foods but Crockett has had two
Vets. in his lifetime and they both tell me to let
him have his butter and cheese but not lots of it.
I am giving it to Mango to, Freckles likes butter
but she is not all that crazy about cheese.
I have also bought bottles of baby food, the toddler
food for Mango. Mostly vegetables, pasta, rice based
foods. I haven't checked with his Vet. to see if that
is okay but it should be. I will be taking Crockett to
the clinic on Tuesday so I am going to ask Rick then
if baby food is okay for Mango. I work so I bought
the jars of baby food for fast food for him in the
mornings. He is also on a pellet diet, two different
pellets that I mix half and half. Seeds I only have
given him a few. Crockett eats seeds and Freckles is
on pellets. Crockett has been eating seeds for almost
seventeen years and I will not take his seeds away
from him, he is healthy and he loves his seeds. When
I got Crockett seeds were the main diet for birds at
that time and he is hooked on them. I will not let
Mango and Freckles get hooked on seeds. It will just
be a treat for them a couple of times a week and in
very small amounts. Freckles loves the seeds but she
will eat her pellets more than any other food so that
is a good thing. Crockett will taste the pellets but
he don't really eat them he just throws them away.
I have tried for years to get him to eat pellets but
he didn't eat pellets in the wild and he is not going
to eat them now. Freckles and Mango were hand rasied
and they had never tasted seeds at the pet shop.
Mango's Vet. had told me to give Mango anything that
we are eating for our dinner, to let him have a wide
range of foods in his diet. He needs a lot more food
than Crockett and Freckles, he burns a lot more energy.
