Wernicke's Encephalopathy

Memory disorder due to acute thiamine deficiency

Clinical symptoms

• Acute confusional state, sometimes coma
• Opthalmoplegia (cranial nerve VI paresis)
• Ataxia
• Nystagmus

Disease Pathology (Brain areas affected):

• mamllary bodies
• fornix
• medial thalamus - hemorrhagic necrosis of the tissues here
