Labyrinthitis

also known as: Viral Labyrinthitis, Vestibular neuronitis, "inner ear infection"

• sudden onset of severe whirling vertigo with nausea, vomiting and ataxia lasting acutely for 3-5 days
• followed by poor balance for weeks to months especially if tired
• Benign positional vertigo (BPV) may follow due to debrie in the semicircular canals
• may be preceded by flu like illness or URI
• differential diagnosis is TIA/CVA

Treatment:

• Bed rest
• anti-emetic
• lorazepam
• early ambulation
