Labyrinthitis
also known as: Viral Labyrinthitis, Vestibular neuronitis, "inner ear infection"
- sudden onset of severe whirling vertigo with nausea, vomiting and ataxia lasting acutely for 3-5 days
- followed by poor balance for weeks to months especially if tired
- Benign positional vertigo (BPV) may follow due to debrie in the semicircular canals
- may be preceded by flu like illness or URI
- differential diagnosis is TIA/CVA
Treatment:
- Bed rest
- anti-emetic
- lorazepam
- early ambulation
