Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
- infarction of brain tissue (lack of oxygen and glucose delivery to brain
tissue due to occluded blood flow)
- result of atheroma, embolus, or consequence of ruptured vessel
- 5 minutes or ischemia causes irreversible cell damage
Risk factors:
- diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis,
age...
Signs and symptoms:
- dependent on location, size and functional area affected
- initially paralysis, dysfunction increase for about 48 hr, then select recovery
Treatment:
- clot-busters (tPA), rehab
