• infarction of brain tissue (lack of oxygen and glucose delivery to brain tissue due to occluded blood flow)
• result of atheroma, embolus, or consequence of ruptured vessel
• 5 minutes or ischemia causes irreversible cell damage
  

Risk factors:

• diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, age...
  

Signs and symptoms:

• dependent on location, size and functional area affected
• initially paralysis, dysfunction increase for about 48 hr, then select recovery
