zachary d street:

First Words on the Other Side

finally, old bonebagger, you have arrived
I've been waiting here eight months
in bed, peeking out the curtains
for your shadow
They told me you would steal in
through the window
like a sudden breath
but you came straight through
the front door
unconcerned with decency
privacy, or the fragile hearts
of a son and two daughters
that were almost ready
to say goodbye

They were watching the window

but in you come
two seconds too soon
and this pain that runs
in me like blood
spills across the room
As they watch you
gather me up mid-sentence
I was about to say I loved them
I was about to say goodbye
