American Apology
I would like to meet the girl who made my shoes
I would tell her that I'm sorry about the oppressive hand of my motherland
and I would tell her that I'm sorry her father had been beat
when he tried to join a union so his children could eat
I would tell her that I'm sorry about her brother who almost turned three
I had meant to send the dime that would have bought the vaccine
but the snickers at the checkout looked extra sweet
I would tell her that I'm sorry famine had destroyed her land
but that's the way it is with exports and supply and demand
maybe if she read up on economics she would understand
I would tell her that I'm sorry this is the way things have to be
but life is tough at the bottom of a global economy
So I would tell her next time not to pull the stitches quite so taut
because it cramps my toes and hurts my feet when I walk
