November 1999 Day-By-Day Summary

November 1

After kicking an unconscious Tom in the water, and not sure of what Eddie has seen, Alec dives in to "save" Tom. He claims Tom fell accidentally while he holds Tom's head underwater. Eddie jumps into the lake, and Alec directs him to the other side, while continuing to keep Tom below the surface. Eddie is able to rescue Tom, despite Alec's sabotage. To Alec's chagrin, the EMTs are able to revive Tom. Margo writes a letter to Alec, proclaiming him a "wonderful man." Emily visits Margo and is thrilled to hear that Tom's scheming to get Margo arrested has destroyed their marriage--permanently. A visibly shaken Hal springs Margo from her cell, and Emily is delighted to discover the letter Margo has written to Alec. Hal blames Alec for Tom's condition, but an innocent Eddie tells the tale of Alec's heroic attempts to save him. Hal warns Alec that he will find out what really happened when Tom wakes up. Margo stays with Tom and begs him not to leave her.

November 2

Bob heads to Lisa's penthouse to inform her of Tom's accident. A bond forms between them as they worry together about their son's current state. Alec tells Margo his version of what happened at the lake--Tom attacked him. When he asks Margo if she believes him, Margo insists that she does. After, she tells a comatose Tom that she is going to try and find out the real story. She questions Eddie, who admits that Alec didn't jump into the lake to save Tom until he saw that Eddie was there. Alec overhears their conversation and becomes angry. Still, Eddie swears that Alec is responsible for saving Tom's life. Emily gets to visit with Tom and reads him the upsetting parts from Margo's letter to Alec. When Tom is finally alone, Alec sneaks into his room and messes with his life support machine.

Margo discovers Alec in Tom's room before he can pull the plug. Alec insists he's only concerned for Tom's welfare. Bob and Lisa are shocked when Margo stands by Alec. Adam blames Hal for Tom's condition, and finally breaks down. He visits Tom, but can't control his anger and ends up running from the room. Eddie talks to Adam, who realizes he may have been too hard on Tom. He goes to Tom's room. When he sees Margo is there, he smiles and chooses not to go in. Hal blasts Margo for continuing to defend Alec, but suspects something else is going on. Margo visits Tom and reveals her true feelings: she knows that Alec is lying and tried to kill Tom. Emily is rocked when she overhears Margo admit she still loves Tom. Alec asks Margo to leave town with him, and she agrees--in order to keep tabs on him.

John is appalled when he overhears Margo planning to leave town with Alec. Margo stands by her decision, but later asks John to take care of her family if she doesn't return home. Margo pleads with Tom to wake up so he can reveal the truth about Alec. Tom moves his hand, but Margo doesn't see. She takes off and finds a gun in Alec's briefcase. Soon after, Alec discovers her planting a bug in his suite.

A maid discovers Alec's body and Hal comes to investigate. Jake and Lucinda arrive at the murder scene, stunned to see that Alec is dead. Hal questions the maid, who reveals that the last person to leave Alec's room was Margo Hughes. Margo is relieved to find Tom alive and well at the hospital. Margo apologizes for not believing Tom about Alec, and cryptically tells Tom that Alec won't hurt any of them ever again.

Lily also orders news director Henry not to run the tape on Margo. Chris promises Nancy that he'll spend time with Casey and Adam while Tom and Margo are absent. Kim informs John that Alec is dead and Margo is in custody. John defends Margo by saying he'd want to kill anyone that harmed any of his loved ones. Georgia breaks the news to Eddie that Alec is dead. She goes on to tell him that Margo is the prime suspect and reveals that Alec tried to kill Tom. Eddie refuses to believe it, and mourns losing his father so soon after finding him. Eddie heads out to confront Margo. Could she be responsible for the deaths of both his mother and father?

Lisa upsets John and Tom by taking a hard line against Margo. Tom defends his estranged wife. After finding out about Margo's questioning, Emily is about to smear her in an Argus headline, but mysteriously changes her mind before the newspaper goes to press. Emily visits Tom, oozing with sympathy. John blasts Tom for letting Emily into his room. Emily leaves, hinting that Lisa has turned on Margo. At the police station, Margo's only thoughts are to get back to Tom. She wants to go ahead with the interrogation without her lawyer, Cass. Eddie arrives and demands to know if she killed his father. Margo warns Eddie that more bad news about Alec may come out. She admits she's not sure if she killed Alec, but Eddie doesn't believe her. A bitter Eddie accuses her of killing both his parents and leaving him alone. Cass blasts Margo for having spoken to Hal and Jessica without him. Lisa arrives. She feels Margo betrayed Tom and wants her to divorce him. Margo tries to reason with her, but it's obvious Margo has lost Lisa's support. Margo admits she shouldn't have left the crime scene. Cass tries to prove Margo's innocence, but a forensics report reveals her finger prints were on the gun--and one of them was on the trigger. Jessica and Hal have no choice but to arrest Margo for Alec's murder.

November 12

When Tom wakes up, he's livid to find out that Margo's been arrested and that Bob kept it from him. Through his weakness and dizzy spells--and over Bob's protests--Tom heads out to go see Margo. Margo and Cass debate a trial vs. a plea bargain. She admits that although she is a cop, her record isn't as squeaky clean as he thinks, and runs down a list of all the black marks on her record.Though Cass objects, Margo, frightened that a conviction will take her away from her family forever, insists on making a deal with Jessica. Jessica is tough and agrees to only second-degree murder. Tom arrives and declares there will be no plea bargain. Tom begs her not to take the plea. He loves her, and he and the boys can't lose her now. Tom promises to stand by her no matter what. Does Margo trust him? Margo finally agrees to let Tom and Cass fight for her in court. Tom and Margo return home to the boys, and the Hughes family shares a warm reunion. Tom realizes that since no drug container was found on Wallace, they can nab the real killer once they find the container. Margo thanks a weak Tom for being there, and promises to take care of him. Distracted by the Wallace murder case and his doubts about Margo's innocence, Hal dismisses Jennifer's attempts to get his attention. Tom persists, and convinces her to return to the scene of the crime. They find Jack guarding Alec's suite, but he lets them in. Margo has a flashback and flips out. Tom tries to get Margo to go over the events of the night in question, but Margo gets upset and rushes out. Hal is furious when Jack reveals that he let Margo on to the crime scene.
